To save battery power or to work in comfort, you can increase or decrease the brightness of your laptop in Windows 7. Most desktops use an external monitor and the brightness can only be adjusted with the physical buttons on the monitor or with the brightness slider.
Method 1 of 2: Use the brightness slider
Step 1. Click the power options icon
It's the stack icon at the bottom right of the screen.
- You may need to click on ▲.
- If you don't see this icon anywhere at the bottom right of the screen, open the menu To start up then click on Control panel.
Step 2. Click Adjust screen brightness
This link is at the bottom of the pop-up window. Click on it to open the power options menu.
- If you go through the control panel, click on Power options.
Step 3. Drag the slider left or right
The cursor Screen brightness is at the bottom of the window. Drag it to the left to decrease the brightness of your laptop screen and to the right to increase it.
- If you don't see the cursor Screen brightness at the bottom of the power options window, you'll need to restore it before you can adjust the brightness of your laptop.
Method 2 of 2: restore the brightness slider
Step 1. Open the Start menu
Click on the Windows logo at the bottom left of the screen.
Step 2. Type device manager
Windows will search for Device Manager on your computer.
Step 3. Click
It should appear at the top of the window To start up. Click on it to open the device manager.
Step 4. Expand the Monitors category
Click on ► to the left of the header Monitors.
You may need to scroll down to find this option
Step 5. Select the monitor under the Monitors category
Under category Monitors, you should see the name of a monitor. Click on it to select it.
Step 6. Go to the Action tab
This is one of the tabs at the top of the Device Manager window.
Step 7. Click Properties
This option is at the bottom of the drop-down menu Action. Click on it to open the properties of your monitor.
Step 8. Go to the Driver tab
This tab is at the top of the properties window.
Step 9. Choose Uninstall
The option Uninstall is located at the bottom left of the window.
Step 10. Wait for the driver to be uninstalled
The process will only take a moment. Once the driver is uninstalled, the device manager list will be refreshed and you will notice that the category Monitors will have disappeared.
Step 11. Click Scan for Hardware Changes
It's the square, monitor-shaped button at the top of the Device Manager window. Click on it to reinstall and update the driver you just removed.
Step 12. Make sure your monitor appears in the list again
Once Device Manager finishes checking for changes, it will automatically reinstall the Microsoft Basic Driver for your monitor. The brightness slider should be available again.
Step 13. Restart your computer
This step probably won't be necessary, but it won't cost you anything and you don't have to do it later.
Step 14. Try to adjust the brightness
After restarting your computer, click the power options button on the taskbar to find the restored brightness options.
