Python is an interpreted programming language that is freely available for all operating systems. This language evolves quite quickly, and perhaps you have decided to replace the active version on your computer with a newer one. It may be necessary to uninstall the existing version to avoid the risk of conflicts.


Method 1 of 2: Uninstall Python on Windows 10

Step 1. Open the start menu of



Click on the Windows logo icon at the bottom left of your screen. A menu will appear.

Windows settings.

Click on the gear icon in the lower left corner of the start menu. This will display the system settings window.

You will find it in the middle part of the settings window.

Step 4. Find the version of Python to uninstall

Scroll through the list of installed applications until you find the section of those whose names begin with a P. Look for apps whose name contains Python, like Python 3.6.9.

  • You may need to click on the tab titled Applications and Features in the upper left corner of the window.

Step 5. Click on the name of the Python version

This will have the effect of expanding the display corresponding to Python. You will see a button titled Uninstall.

You should find it below the Python version description.

Step 7. Click Uninstall when prompted

You should see this new button appear above the Python version description.

Step 8. Click the Yes button when prompted

This will confirm your intention to uninstall Python.

Step 9. Wait for the uninstallation to complete

You should see a window appear with a progress bar. When the latter reaches its right end and disappears, Python should be completely uninstalled.

Step 10. Uninstall other versions of Python if necessary

Several versions of Python can coexist on the same system, do a new search for applications whose name begins with P. If you see another version of the language installed, follow the same steps as above if you want to uninstall it.

Step 11. Delete the Python version 2 folder

Uninstalling Python 3 will remove all of its folders on your computer, but the language version 2 uninstaller won't go that far and erase those folders. To delete folders from Pyton 2, follow these steps:

  • open This PC;
  • double-click on your hard drive in the section Disks and peripherals;
  • search for named folders Python27 or something similar in the directory listing;
  • select the folders whose name contains Python then right click on it to display a context menu;
  • click the option Wipe off from the drop-down menu.

Method 2 of 2: Uninstall Python on Mac

Click on the Finder icon that looks like a blue face. It's in the Dock of your Mac.

You will achieve the same result by clicking on an empty space on your desktop

You will find this tab at the top of your screen. Clicking on it will display a drop-down menu.

Step 3. Choose the Go to Folder… option

This option is at the bottom of the drop-down menu opened in response to your click on Go. This will have the effect of opening a dialogue.

Step 4. Enter the address of the Python installation folder

Depending on the installed version of Python, you will need to enter one of the following addresses in the text entry box titled Go to folder:

  • for versions of Python 3.6 and above, enter


  • for Python 2.7, enter

    / Library / Python / Versions or / Library / Python.

Step 5. Click Go

This button is located at the bottom of the displayed dialog. The folder where Python is installed will open.

Step 6. Select the folder named with the version number

Click on the folder whose name is the Python version number.

  • If you are erasing Python 3.6.9 from your Mac, click on the folder named 3.6.9 to select it.

Step 7. Click the tab labeled File

You'll find it in the upper left corner of your Mac screen. A drop-down menu will appear.

This option is in the drop-down menu opened when you clicked the tab File.

Step 9. Enter your password when prompted

Enter the password you usually use to log into your Mac.

If you are not prompted for a password, skip this step and the next

This button is located at the bottom of the displayed box to enter your password. This will close the password entry box and bring the folder where Python is installed to the system recycle bin.

Step 11. If necessary, delete the Python application

Not all versions of Python will install a program in your Mac's applications folder. But you should check it out to be sure. You will be able to find and clear Python applications by applying the following:

  • click the tab Go which is at the top of the screen;
  • click the option Applications in the drop-down menu that opens;
  • search for an application whose name contains Python (like Python 3.6.x);
  • select the app if you find it;
  • click on File then on Move to trash;
  • enter your password then click on OK.
