You can convert a PDF file to an editable document using Google Docs on a computer. Note that Google Docs will change the layout and remove all images. If you want to keep the layout, you will have to use another method.
Step 1. Know which PDFs can be edited
PDFs created from text documents (eg files from Word or Notepad) can be opened as text files with Google Docs as long as they are not password protected.
If the PDF file you want to edit contains one or more photos or if it is locked with a password, you won't be able to use Google Docs to edit it
Step 2. Open Google Docs
Go to Google Docs in your web browser. If you are logged in, it will bring up the main page of the application.
- If you are not logged in, click Go to Google Docs in the middle of the page then enter your email address followed by your password. If you are asked to log in without clicking anything, do so.
Step 3. Click the file selection icon
It's the folder icon in the upper right corner of the page. Click on it to open a pop-up window.
Step 4. Choose Import
This option is at the top of the pop-up window.
Step 5. Click Select a file on your device
It's the blue button at the bottom of the window. Click on it to open a window where you can select your PDF file.
Step 6. Select your PDF file
Click on the PDF file you want to upload to Google Docs. If it is in a different folder than the one that opens, click on the corresponding folder on the left of the first window.
Step 7. Click Open
This option is located at the bottom right of the window. Click on it to import the PDF into Google Docs. Wait for the PDF to open to proceed to the next step.
Step 8. Select Open With
The Open with option is at the top of the page. Click on it to open a drop-down menu.
Step 9. Choose Google Docs
This option is in the drop-down menu and opens your PDF in Google Docs in a new tab. You can then modify its content as you wish.
Step 10. Edit your PDF
You can edit, add, or delete text just like you would with any Google Docs document.
The layout of your PDF may change depending on the type of PDF you had before opening it in Google Docs
Step 11. Download the edited PDF
Click on File, select the option To download in the drop-down menu then choose PDF document. The file will be converted to PDF and will be downloaded to your computer.
- You can also click Microsoft Word instead of PDF if you want to save the file in Word format so that you can edit it later.
You can edit a PDF without affecting its layout using programs other than Google Docs
- While there are apps to convert PDF files to Word files that you can install on Google Drive, none will allow you to convert PDF images and layout to Word document.
- It is not possible to convert PDF to document in Google Drive and Google Docs on mobile.
