Messenger alerts you whenever you receive a new message or when someone adds you to their contacts. If you're tired of popping notifications, you can adjust them to be less intrusive or turn them off altogether. To completely turn off notifications, you will need to go through your device settings, not the Messenger app settings.
Part 1 of 3: Turn off notifications on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
Step 1. Go to Messenger settings tab
You can adjust some notification settings directly in the Messenger app. Tap the settings tab at the bottom right of the app to get started.
Step 2. Tap Notifications
This option opens the Messenger notification settings.
Note: Messenger notification ringtone cannot be changed on iOS
Step 3. Turn off notifications for a set amount of time
Press the cursor Do not disturb to temporarily turn off notifications. The deactivation time can be up to 24 hours (it is not possible to permanently deactivate notifications in this way). Use this feature if you want to stop receiving notifications for a while.
Step 4. Uncheck the Show previews option
This will prevent Messenger notifications from showing the sender's name or the message you received.
Step 5. Tap Notifications in Messenger
When the Messenger app is open and active, it emits specific sounds and vibrations that you can turn off in this menu.
Step 6. Open the Settings app on your device
You can permanently turn off Messenger notifications, but you can also adjust other notification settings from within the app. Settings from your iOS device.
Step 7. Select Notifications then Messenger
This will open the notification settings for Messenger.
Step 8. Uncheck the Allow notifications option
All notifications from Messenger will be disabled. The same will be the case for the additional notification options under the slider.
Step 9. Adjust the notification options
If you decide to keep Messenger notifications enabled, you can adjust some options in this menu.
- Press on In Notification Center to show or hide Messenger notifications in Notification Center.
- Press on Sounds to activate or deactivate the notification tones.
- Press on Badge on app icon to show or hide the number of unread messages on the Messenger icon.
- Press on Show on locked screen to show or hide notifications when your device is locked.
Part 2 of 3: Disable Notifications on Android
Step 1. View your profile in Messenger
You will be able to configure some notification settings from this menu.
Step 2. Select Sounds & Notifications
This option allows you to adjust certain notification settings of the application.
Step 3. Tap Yes at the top of the screen
This option allows you to temporarily deactivate notifications (it does not allow you to deactivate them permanently). The deactivation time can be up to 24 hours.
Step 4. Uncheck the Notification previews option
When notification preview is off, Messenger will not display sender information or message preview on the lock screen.
Step 5. Uncheck the Vibrate and Light options
This will disable these notification methods. If your device does not have a notification LED, you will not see the option Light.
Step 6. Select a new notification ringtone
Press on His to select one of the notification ringtones available on your Android. Read this article to learn how to add new ringtones to your device.
Step 7. Tap the Sounds switch in the app
This option allows you to enable or disable the sounds you hear when you use Messenger, such as when you refresh your list of recent messages.
Step 8. Open the Settings app on your device
To completely turn off Messenger notifications, go to the app Settings of your device.
Step 9. Select Apps, Applications, or Application Manager
This will display a list of all the apps installed on your device.
Step 10. Tap Messenger on the application list
If you have multiple email apps installed, make sure you select the correct one.
Step 11. Clear the Show notifications check box
Messenger app notifications will be completely disabled.
Step 12. Disable notifications on Android 6.0 and above
If you can't find the box Show notifications, this is probably because you are on Android 6.0 or newer and the notification options are in another location.
- Return to the main menu of the application Settings then select Sounds and notifications.
- Scroll down to the option Apps.
- Select Messenger in the list of applications.
- Activate the option To block to turn off notifications.
Part 3 of 3: turn off notifications for certain conversations
Step 1. Open a conversation
Find the conversation for which you want to turn off notifications. This tip can be useful if you don't want to be disturbed by a group chat or something like that. The process is the same whether it's on iOS or Android.
Step 2. Tap the recipient's name at the top of the screen
If you're using an Android device, tap the ⓘ icon instead to open the conversation details.
Step 3. Select Notifications
Choose one of the available options to turn off notifications during this time interval.
Step 4. Choose Until reactivated
This option allows you to completely disable notifications for this conversation. You will only receive an alert for new messages after disabling the option Do not disturb.
