On Facebook, you can prevent other users from seeing one of your photos or albums. You can put your photos private either on the website or on the mobile app. Keep in mind that you cannot change the privacy options of photos, videos, and albums that you haven't posted to your profile.

Method 1 of 4: Put a photo privately on the website

Step 1. Open Facebook

Go to the Facebook website. Your news feed will appear if you are signed in to Facebook.

If you are not logged in to Facebook, enter your email address and password

Step 2. Go to your profile

Click on your name at the top right of the Facebook page.

Step 3. Click the Photos tab

It can be found under the cover photo at the top of the Facebook page.

Step 4. Select a category

Click on a category (for example Your pictures) at the top of the page.

Step 5. Choose a photo

Click on the photo you want to put in private to view it.

The photo must be on your account and not on that of another user

Step 6. Click on the privacy icon

This icon is usually a silhouette of a person (or 2 people) and can be found below your name and at the top right of the photo. Click on it to open a drop-down menu.

  • If clicking on this icon displays a menu that says Change the privacy of the post, click on Change the privacy of the post to open the post. Click the privacy icon at the top before continuing.

This option is in the drop-down menu and immediately changes the privacy of the photo so that only you can see it.

Method 2 of 4: Make a private photo on mobile

Tap the Facebook app icon which is a white "f" on a dark blue background. This will open your news feed if you are logged in.

This option is either at the bottom right (on iPhone) or at the top of the screen (on Android) and opens a menu.

Step 3. Tap your name

This option is at the top of the menu and displays your profile page.

Step 4. Scroll down and tap Photos

This is a tab under the information section.

Step 5. Select a photo category

Tap a category (for example Downloads) at the top of the screen.

Step 6. Choose a photo

Tap the photo you want to make private. It will open on your phone.

Make sure the selected photo is part of the one you uploaded and not just a photo you've been tagged with. You cannot change the privacy settings for photos that are not yours

This button is located at the top right of the screen and opens a menu.

This option is in the menu and opens a new menu.

  • For some photos, you will have to press Change the privacy of the post.
  • If you can't find this option, the photo in question is in an album you created and cannot be made private. Instead, you can make the album private.

This option is at the bottom of the menu.

  • Skip this step if there is only Only me in your menu.

Method 3 of 4: Make an album private on the website

Step 1. Go to Facebook

Open the Facebook site in your browser. This will open your news feed if you are logged into your account.

Step 2. Go to your profile

Click on your name at the top right of the Facebook page.

This option is at the top right of the page Pictures. Click on it to open a list of photo albums on your Facebook profile.

Step 5. Find an album that you want to make private

  • Some albums are integrated into the Facebook website and cannot be made private.
  • The album Mobile downloads (or the album IOS Photos for old downloads from an Apple phone) cannot be made private.

This option is located at the bottom right of the album cover and opens a small menu.

If you don't see the 3-dot icon on the selected album, it can't be made private. However, you can make the photos and videos it contains private

This option is in the menu and opens the album page.

Step 8. Click on the privacy menu

You'll find it at the top of the page. Click on it to display a drop-down menu.

You can only make private albums that you've uploaded to Facebook.

  • If the photos you want to make private are in a Facebook album (for example Mobile downloads), you can still individually hide the photos it contains.
