Whether it's for personal reasons or to declutter your news feed, you can stop following someone on Facebook. Stopping following someone removes all their posts from your news feed, but unlike blocking, you will still be able to see their profile if you choose to open it.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Stop following someone on mobile

Step 1. Open Facebook

This is the app with a white "f" on a blue background. If you are logged in, this will open your news feed.

  • If you are not yet logged in to Facebook, type your email address (or phone number) and password, then press Log in.

Step 2. Tap the search bar

It's at the top of the screen.

Step 3. Type in your friend's name

This must be the person you no longer want to follow. As you type, you'll see suggestions appear below the search bar.

You can also tap your friend's name in your friends list or in your news feed if you prefer

It should be at the top of any search results that appear.

Step 5. Press the Already Subscribed button

You'll find it in the row of options directly below the user's profile picture and username.

By default, you are subscribed to all the friends you have added

Step 6. Select Stop Tracking

This option is located on the far left of the context menu that appears at the bottom of the screen.

Step 7. Tap at the top of the screen

This will close the menu and save your changes. You will no longer see your friend's updates in your feed.

Method 2 of 2: Stop following someone on a desktop

Step 1. Go to the Facebook website

If you are logged in to Facebook, you will come across your news feed.

  • If you are not yet logged into Facebook, enter your email address (or phone number) in the upper right corner of the screen and click Log in.

It's the white text field at the top of the page with "Search" written on it.

This must be the person you no longer wish to follow. As you type, suggestions will appear below the search bar.

Facebook will search for your friend.

Step 6. Hover over the Already Subscribed button with your mouse cursor

This button is at the top of your friend's Facebook page, to the right of their profile picture.

Step 7. Click Stop Following [Name]

This option is at the bottom of the drop-down menu Already subscribed and allows you to no longer follow the selected friend. All notifications and activities from that person will be removed from your news feed.

  • You can stop following someone by tapping or clicking the arrow at the top right of a friend's post in your news feed and then selecting Stop following x.
