It is possible to increase your chances of getting a verified account on Twitter, which will cause an icon with a blue and white check mark to appear next to your username.

Note: Since Twitter suspended the verification process in November 2017, you can no longer apply to have your account verified, however, you can optimize it to encourage Twitter to verify it

Steps

Part 1 of 4: Use general tips

Get a Verified Account on Twitter Step 1

Step 1. Understand who usually gets a verified account

Among the reasons that lead to an account verification (whether you have requested it or have been chosen by the Twitter verification team), there are famous personalities (e.g. musicians, actors, athletes, artists, public figures, government agencies, etc.) or a name that has been parodied or imitated on multiple Twitter accounts, which can lead to some confusion.

  • Twitter will not take into account the number of followers you have or the number of tweets you have posted to verify your account.
  • For more information, take a look at the terms and conditions. You can find them by going to the Twitter help center.

Step 2. Be active on Twitter

By posting at least twice a day and responding to people who tag you in their comments, you will show that your account is active while increasing the positive reception of your content by your audience.

Make sure to discuss your content, services, or other topics with your audience so that Twitter sees that they care about what you post

Step 3. Develop an influential public account

As mentioned earlier, Twitter favors publicly recognized accounts like artists and entrepreneurs over accounts that have little public reach. If you work for a publication, are an artist in a troupe, or interact with audiences in any way, you need to use it to get verified.

  • You should also avoid posting content that is controversial. Even though Twitter verification doesn't mean Twitter approves your content, they'll still factor in the good (or bad) you do with your account.
  • For example, you might have a blog or YouTube account that you use to communicate with your audience. This must be the focal point of your Twitter account if you want to increase your chances of getting verified.

Step 4. Update your account information

Twitter's verification standards are quite strict, which is why you are going to have to put all the necessary information in your profile, including a profile and header photo, your name, a biography and your location.

Step 5. Follow verified accounts

This allows you to see how other verified accounts are behaving and increases your chances of having your own verified account. When you follow verified accounts, you show that you are seriously engaging with verified actors in the community.

As with any type of social media engagement, it's going to be helpful for you to tag these verified accounts in your content and engage with them as much as possible

Step 6. Contact the official verified Twitter account

If you want to do something straightforward to improve your chances, you can tweet the verified Twitter account (@verified) and ask them to review your account. This is unlikely to be successful, but it might help the verification team add your account to the list of accounts to verify.

Be polite when addressing the verification account. They may blacklist your account if they don't like the message you send them

Step 7. Be patient

Even with a commitment and a perfect account, you might have to wait a very long time for your account to be verified (if it ever does happen). Twitter examines the content of millions of accounts, which is why you need to be patient and continue to maintain your account in case Twitter takes a look to verify it.

The application process for account verification may come back at one point or another, which means the verification process will become more straightforward. Until that happens, you just have to wait

Step 7. Add a specific location

Enter your location in the text field Site on the left of the page. Many people use the location on Twitter to enter a fancy or bizarre location, but you must use your real location (such as the city you live in) for Twitter to consider verifying your account.

Step 8. Link to your website

In the text field Website, you can put a location to one of your most impressive online accomplishments, whether it's your writer profile, your YouTube channel, or the homepage of a startup you're the director of.

  • The website you choose should explain for itself why you deserve to have your profile verified. For example, if you have a writer's profile on a news site (like Le Monde), you could leave a link to your profile.
  • You should always use your best achievement in the website section. For example, if you are moving from writer to publication manager, you need to update your profile with the website you own.

Step 9. Add your date of birth

Rather, it's a small detail, but you want to make sure Twitter has all the information possible to decide whether or not to verify you. You must enter your date of birth in the text field for this purpose on the left of the page.

Step 10. Build your biography

Write it in the text field that appears under your name on the left of the page. Your bio is a key part of proving to Twitter (and your audience) that you are worth checking out. It should contain the following details.

  • The type of work or public service you do (describe your account in a few words).
  • Profile mentions that you can use as references (for example, you could write "Writer at @wikiHow" instead of "Writer at wikiHow").
  • One or two personal success stories (eg “manager of [your company]”).
  • A fun line, only if it doesn't distract from the rest of your bio.
  • You can spruce up your role a bit in certain contexts. For example, if you run a small business that involves editing the work of others, you might call yourself an “entrepreneur” or even an “executive director”.
Get a Verified Account on Twitter Step 33

Step 11. Click Save Changes

You will find it at the top right of the page. This will save the changes you just made to your profile. Once your profile is optimized for verification, you're that little bit closer to receiving your little blue check mark next to your name.

Advice

  • You can look for other verified accounts to see how they perform if you're looking for ideas. The easiest way to do this is to go to the verified Twitter account (@verified), select the tab Subscribers and take a look at the subscriber list.
  • Once your account has been verified, you might notice that some of your subscribers have been removed.

Warnings

  • Do not add a fake verification check mark next to your username. Only you are going to find it cool, and Twitter could suspend your account if you do.
  • If you change your username, you could lose your verification badge.
  • You cannot have a verified account on Twitter if your tweets are protected, as the main purpose of verification is to draw attention to influential public accounts.
  • A verified account will not prevent other users from creating accounts to parody or impersonate you.
