If the tweets are public on Twitter, you can use private messages (PM) to start private conversations with other users. Twitter turns on read receipts (the feature that tells you if someone has seen your post) by default, but you can turn it off if you prefer. Method 1 of 2: Use Twitter's mobile app

Step 1. Open Twitter on your tablet or phone

Its icon is a little blue bird, and it's usually found on the home screen or in the apps drawer.

It can be found at the bottom right of your Twitter feed. Your Messages inbox will then open.

Step 3. Touch a conversation

Tap the name of the person you messaged to open the whole conversation. The most recent message appears at the bottom.

Step 4. Touch a message bubble

If the recipient has read your message, the word Seen appears just below the bubble, to the left of the check mark (✓). If you don't see the word Seen, the recipient hasn't yet opened your message or has turned off read receipts.

Step 5. Update your read receipts preferences (optional)

Twitter enables these read receipts (letting you know if someone has viewed your posts) by default. You can turn off this feature in your settings. To achieve this, follow the steps below.

  • Tap your profile picture at the top left.
  • Touch Settings and privacy.
  • Choose Privacy and content.
  • To turn off read receipts, turn off the Send / receive read receipts switch so that it is grayed out. It is located under the Private messages heading. Your changes will be saved immediately.
  • To enable read receipts, turn the switch on so that it turns blue or green.

Step 1. Go to the Twitter site in your browser

Your personalized feed will be displayed if you are already logged in to your account. If you are not logged in, follow the on-screen instructions to do so now.

Click the name of the person you messaged to open the whole conversation. The most recent message appears at the bottom.

Step 4. Click the check mark (✓) below the sent message

It's just below the message, to the right of the send time. If you see the word Seen appear under the check mark after clicking, the recipient has read your message correctly. Otherwise, the recipient has not yet opened your message or has deactivated read receipts.

Step 5. Update your read receipts preferences (optional)

Twitter enables these read receipts (letting you know if someone has seen your posts) by default. You can turn off this feature in your settings. To achieve this, follow the steps below.

  • Click on the menu More in the left column.
  • Click on Settings and privacy.
  • Choose Privacy and content in the central column.
  • To deactivate read receipts, clear the Send / receive read receipts check box under the Private messages heading. Your changes will be saved immediately.
  • To activate read receipts, check the box.
