For security reasons or to take advantage of new features, you can update your Internet Explorer browser. Note, however, that Microsoft has discontinued support for Internet Explorer at version 11 and updating is no longer possible beyond this version. The browser is also only available on Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 although Microsoft Edge is now the default browser in Windows 10.
Method 1 of 3: Download Internet Explorer 11
Step 1. Go to the Internet Explorer 11 download page
Open the Internet Explorer 11 download page on your web browser.
Step 2. Scroll down the page
On the left of the page, you will see a list of languages.
Step 3. Select your operating system
To the right of the chosen language, you will see your computer's operating system. Click on the link to start downloading the installation file.
- The Windows 7 installer file will work on Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 as long as you choose the correct format for your version of the system (32-bit or 64-bit).
- If you do not know which version of Windows you are using on your machine (32 bit or 64 bit), right click on This PC, select Properties then look at the number of bits shown next to System type.
Step 4. Double-click the Internet Explorer installer icon
The Internet Explorer installer icon should be on the desktop.
Step 5. Select Yes at the command prompt
The Internet Explorer 11 installation window will open.
Step 6. Follow the directions on the screen
This is to accept Microsoft's terms of service by clicking on I accept then on Following before selecting an installation folder and choosing between installing or not a shortcut on the desktop.
Step 7. Click Finish
This button is located at the bottom right of the window and is used to complete the Internet Explorer 11 installation process.
Method 2 of 3: Turn on updates in Internet Explorer 10
Step 1. Open Internet Explorer
This is the blue "e" shaped icon that you will find when typing "Internet Explorer" into the start menu.
Step 2. Click ⚙️
You will find this icon at the top right of the Internet Explorer window.
Step 3. Select About Internet Explorer
This option is at the bottom of the drop-down menu.
Step 4. Select the Install new versions automatically check box
This option is in the middle of the About Internet Explorer window.
Step 5. Click Close
This is the button at the bottom of the About Internet Explorer window. Now the browser will update automatically.
Method 3 of 3: Update Microsoft Edge
Step 1. Close Microsoft Edge
You must close Edge before you can start the update process (if there is an update available).
Step 2. Open the start menu
Click on the Windows logo at the bottom left of the screen or press the ⊞ Win key on your keyboard.
Step 3. Click ⚙️
This button is located at the bottom left of the start window and opens the settings page.
Step 4. Select Update & Security
This option is at the bottom of the settings page.
Step 5. Click Check for Updates
This button is at the top of the Update & Security page.
Step 6. Wait for the updates to install
When the message "Your device is up to date" will appear at the top of the screen, it will mean that Microsoft Edge has been updated.
On Windows 10, Internet Explorer has been replaced by Microsoft Edge which becomes the new integrated web browser
- Despite the Windows 10 Creator update, Internet Explorer is still considered a vulnerable browser. Only use it if you have no other choice.
- Internet Explorer updates should always be downloaded from the official Microsoft site.
