Steps
Method 1 of 2: Change a contact's name on WhatsApp using an iPhone

Step 1. Open the WhatsApp app on your phone
The app icon looks like a green bubble around a white phone handset.
If this is your first time opening it on your device, set it up first

Step 2. Tap Chat
You will see this button at the bottom right of your screen.
If WhatsApp opens to a conversation, you should first press the back button at the top left of the screen to see your list of chats

Step 3. Tap the icon that looks like a pencil
It is located in the upper right corner of your screen.

Step 4. Tap the contact you want to edit
By default, contacts are listed in alphabetical order. You could therefore scroll down the screen before you find the contact you are looking for.

Step 5. Tap the contact name at the top of the screen

Step 6. Tap Edit
This button is located at the top right of your screen.

Step 7. Tap the contact name
The first field is used for the first name and the second for the last name.

Step 8. Enter the new name to assign to the contact
If you want to delete the old name entirely (before entering the new one), press the icon X located at the right end of the Name field.

Step 9. Tap Done
You will see this button at the top right of the screen. This way you will update the contact name both on WhatsApp and in your device's phone book.
Method 2 of 2: Change a contact's name on WhatsApp using an Android

Step 1. Open the WhatsApp app on your Android phone
The app icon looks like a green bubble around a white phone handset.
If this is your first time opening it on your device, set it up first

Step 2. Tap Disc
You will see this button at the top left of your screen.
- If WhatsApp opens to a conversation, you should first press the back button (←) located at the top left of the screen to see the list of your discussions.

Step 3. Tap the profile picture of the contact you want to edit
By doing so, you will see a window with the information of the contact in question.

Step 4. Press ⓘ
You will see this button at the bottom right of the window.

Step 5. Press ⋮
This icon is located at the top right of your screen. By tapping on it, you will see a drop-down menu appear.

Step 6. Tap Edit
This button is in the second position.

Step 7. Tap the contact name
The Name field is near the top of the screen.

Step 8. Enter the new name to assign to the contact
If you want to delete the old name entirely (before entering the new one), press the icon X located at the right end of the Name field.

Step 9. Tap Done
You will see this button (which looks like a V on other models of Android) at the top left (or right on some models). This way, you'll update the contact's name both on WhatsApp and in your device's phone book.
