Learn how to block emails you receive from a specific person, directly from your Hotmail inbox (now called Outlook). You will need to use the Outlook website to configure these settings, as they cannot be changed from the Outlook mobile app.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Block by email address

Step 1. Open the Outlook website

Your inbox will open if you are already logged in to your Outlook account.

  • If you are not already logged in, click Log in, enter your email address (or phone number) and password, then click on Log in.

It's at the top right of the Outlook page.

You'll find this button at the bottom of the drop-down menu under the Settings gear.

Step 4. Choose Blocked Senders

This is located under the Junk Mail heading, which is a subfolder of the Mail category. You will find this option at the bottom left of the page.

Step 5. Click Enter sender or domain here

It's in the middle of the page. It is in this field that you will enter the email address of the person to be blocked.

Step 6. Enter the email address of a sender

You will need to enter the full email address for it to be added to the block list.

Step 7. Press Enter

The email address you entered will be added to the Outlook block list.

  • You can also click on the icon + to the right of the email address field.

Step 8. Click Save

This button is at the top of the page, directly above the Blocked senders heading. Your changes will be saved and any future attempts by this blocked sender to contact you will be prevented.

Method 2 of 3: Create a rule

Step 1. Open the Outlook website

Your inbox will open if you are already logged in to your Outlook account.

  • If you are not already logged in, click Log in, enter your email address (or phone number) and password, then click on Log in.

It's at the top right of the Outlook page.

You'll find them at the bottom of the drop-down menu under the Settings gear.

Step 4. Click Inbox and put away rules

It's at the top left of the Outlook window, under the AutoProcess heading, which is a subfolder of the Mail tab.

Step 5. Choose +

This button is located under the Inbox Rules heading at the top of the page. This will create a new rule that you can customize. Rules in Outlook allow you to schedule an automatic reply to incoming emails. You will now create a rule that automatically deletes emails from certain senders.

Step 6. Enter a name for your rule

Enter the name of your choice in the text field near the top of the page under the Name heading.

It appears under the When the message arrives heading, which is located under the Name field.

Step 8. Hover your mouse over It has been sent or received

This option is at the top of the drop-down menu.

It's at the top of the context menu.

Step 10. Enter an email address

Enter it in the text field under the And it was received from header at the top of the page.

This will add the email address to your list of rules.

  • If this email address has contacted you in the past, it will appear in a drop-down menu under the And it was received from field.
  • You can add multiple email addresses to this page.

Step 12. Do OK

It's at the top left of the page.

Step 13. Click the second Select an item box

It can be found under the Do the following section towards the middle of the page.

Step 14. Choose Move, Copy, or Delete

It's at the top of the drop-down menu.

Step 15. Click Delete Message

This option is at the bottom of the context menu. When you associate the Delete command with the email addresses you added previously, all incoming emails from the listed recipients will be moved to the Trash.

Step 16. Do OK

It's at the top left of the page. You should no longer receive emails from your selected recipients.

Method 3 of 3: Block all unknown incoming emails

Step 1. Open the Outlook website

Your inbox will open if you are already logged in to your Outlook account.

  • If you are not already logged in, click Log in, enter your email address (or phone number) and password, then click on Log in.

You'll find them at the bottom of the drop-down menu under the Settings gear.

Step 4. Click Filters & Junk Mail

This is located under the Junk Mail heading, which is a subfolder of the Mail category. You will find this option at the bottom left of the page.

Step 5. Choose Exclusive

This option is at the top of the page, under the Choose a spam filter heading. This will prevent any email that is not from someone on your Safe Senders list from entering your inbox.

It's at the top left of the page.

Step 7. Make Safe Senders

This option is directly above the Filters & Reports tab on the left of the page.

Step 8. Enter an email address

Type it in the text field under the Safe Senders heading at the top of the page.

Step 9. Press Enter

The email address will then be added to your Safe Senders list. Anyone on this list will be able to contact you. Anyone not listed will not be able to send you emails.

You will need to repeat this process for each email you wish to receive

Step 10. Click Save

This button appears at the top left of the page. You will now only receive emails from people on your Safe Senders list.

Advice

  • You can click the button that appears at the top of an open email. Then click on Create a rule to create a new rule with the email address of the sender of this email in the box Terms & Conditions.
  • When using the Safe Senders list, you will always receive email alerts to which you have subscribed before blocking all emails, even if they are not on your Safe Senders list. To stop receiving them, you can click on the link To unsubscribe in the body of emails each time you receive them.
