Method 1 of 5: Search by date on mobile

You can view emails by recipient, subject, or date.

in the search bar. This indicates that you want to search for emails before a specific date.

Step 4. Type the date in YYYY / MM / DD format

This will search for emails before a specific date. For example, if you want to search emails before 2020, you will have to type before: 2020/01/01 in the search bar.

  • Another option is to specify a date range by typing "after:" followed by a start date in YYYY / MM / DD format then "before:" followed by an end date in YYYY / MM / DD format. For example, you can search for emails for the month of May by typing after: 2020/05/01 before: 2020/05/31 in the search bar.
  • If you need to refine your search even further, type the name or email address of a recipient or sender after the date. You can also type a few words or phrases included in the email. For example, you can type before: 2020/01/01 [email protected] or after: 2020/05/01 before: 2020/05/31 doctor's appointment.

Click a day on the calendar. Use the arrows < Where > at the top of the calendar to select the previous or next month.

  • Make sure the All messages option is selected on the line next to Search at the bottom of the search options window.
  • You can refine your search by adding the name or email address of a recipient or sender next to the To or From options. To search for words or phrases in the email or in the subject line, type them in the Contains words line.

Step 7. Click Search

It's the blue button at the bottom right. Click on it to search for emails entering within the selected time frame.

  • You can also search for emails before a specific date by typing "before:" followed by a date in YYYY / MM / DD format in the search bar. For example, you can search for old emails by typing before: 2018/04/08 in the bar.
  • You can also search for emails within a specific interval by typing "after:" followed by a start date in YYYY / MM / DD format, then "before:" followed by an end date in the search bar. For example, you can search for emails for the month of May by typing after: 2020/05/01 before: 2020/05/31.
  • You can further refine your search by typing the recipient's or sender's name or email address after the date or words and phrases in the email.

Step 1. Open Gmail

If you are not yet logged into your account, please do so.

  • If you're using Gmail on your phone or tablet, tap the red and white envelope labeled "Gmail" on your Home screen or in the app drawer.
  • This method will search for all messages in your Gmail account, including the ones you have archived.

The search bar is at the top of Gmail. It allows you to search for specific senders, recipients or keywords.

  • For a search by sender:

    type from: sender in the search bar, but replace "sender" with the name or email address of the person who sent the message.

  • For a search by recipient:

    type to: recipient, but replace "recipient" with the name or email address of the person to whom you sent a message.

  • For a search by word or by phrase:

    type word or phrase, but replace "word or phrase" with the word or phrase you are looking for.

  • For a search by object:

    type subject: word, but replace "word" with a word that was in the subject line of the message.

  • You can also combine search terms. For example, if you want to see messages from [email protected] with the word "learn" in the subject line, type: from: [email protected] subject line: learn.

Step 4. Press Enter Where Return.

This will display your search results by date with the most recent posts at the top of the list.

  • If you are using a computer, you will see the number of messages matching your search above the upper right corner of the results. If you see something like "1-50 of 133" (the number may vary), use the arrows on the right to view the next page of results.
  • If there are hundreds of search results, you can rearrange them to show the oldest ones first. Click on the number of results then select The oldest.

Method 4 of 5: View deleted messages on a computer

If you are not yet signed in to your account, sign in first.

  • This method allows you to view or restore a message that you have already deleted from Gmail.
  • Deleted messages are sent to the Recycle Bin before being permanently deleted after 30 days. You will then no longer be able to recover them.

Step 2. Click Recycle Bin

The Trash folder is located in the menu on the left edge of the screen. Click on it to display a list of all messages that have not yet been permanently deleted.

  • If you only see icons instead of menu options, click the trash can icon.
  • You may need to click More at the bottom of the menu.

Step 3. Open a message

Click the subject of a message to view the rest of the content.

Step 4. Click on the folder icon with an arrow

You'll find it at the top of the screen, below the search bar. This is the Move to option. Click on it to display a drop-down menu with your Gmail and Google account folders.

This option is found in the drop-down menu that appears when you click the Move to option icon. The selected message (s) will be moved to the Inbox folder.

Method 5 of 5: View deleted messages on a phone or tablet

Step 1. Open Gmail on your phone or tablet

It's the red and white envelope icon on the home screen (on iPhone or iPad) or in the app drawer (on Android).

  • Use this method if you want to view or restore a message that you have already deleted in Gmail.
  • Deleted messages stay in the Trash folder for 30 days before being permanently deleted. Once permanently deleted, you will not be able to recover them.

Step 3. Select Recycle Bin

Depending on the size of your screen, you may need to scroll to find it. Tap it to open a list of messages that have not yet been permanently deleted.

Step 4. Open a message

Tap a message to open it and view its contents. If you want to restore this message and take it out of the Trash, read on.

This button is located at the top right of the screen, next to a small envelope.

This option is at the top of the menu and opens a list of inboxes and folders.

Step 7. Select a destination

If you want to move the message to your usual inbox, select Main. The message will be instantly moved.

If you can't find the message you're looking for and it's been less than 30 days since you deleted it, it's probably been archived. Use any of the search methods in this article to find it

Advice

  • If you can't find the email in your main inbox, look in the Spam, Social, Promotions, or Trash folders.
  • To be sure that you are searching through all messages, be sure to select All Posts in the list of inboxes.
  • You can make it easier to find old emails by organizing them by subject and date received.
