A torrent file is a file shared between peers, without the use of a server. Distributors (seeders) transfer torrent files to clients (also called leechers or peers). The uTorrent software allows you to download torrent files such as movies, music and games. However, peer sharing of copyrighted files is illegal in some countries.

Step 1. Download uTorrent

There are various versions of uTorrent for different platforms. Make sure to download the version for Mac. Choose a destination location for the downloaded file (for example, on the desktop or in the Downloads folder).

Step 2. Open uTorrent

Select the uTorrent icon to launch the program. You will access uTorrent, but to download a torrent you will need to search for the file online.

  • During its installation, uTorrent will attempt to install other unnecessary programs, such as a toolbar, on your computer. To prevent this, read the small print text that appears in the installation window, and be sure to check only the option boxes necessary for installation.

Step 3. Find the torrent file

Go to a reliable torrent site and find the file you want. Enter the name of the movie, game or music you want to download in the site's search bar. Be specific in the search, in order to get precise results.

  • For example, if you enter TED in the search bar, you will get a multitude of results, which are probably not what you are looking for. For that you have to be specific. You can type for example TEDx Paris September 13, 2016, full video for a more precise result.
  • If you don't know of any torrent sites, type in the name of the movie, game or music you want to download, followed by torrent in a search engine and you will be taken to a torrent site. You can also add the mention Mac to be redirected to torrent files for Mac.

Step 4. Browse the list of available torrents

Browse the torrents in the list and choose the one you prefer considering the file size (large files take longer to download, but are of better quality) and the file type (avi, mkv, mp4, etc).

  • If you don't know which one to choose, select the one with more seeders.
  • Select the file and read the comments about it. Prioritize files that received good reviews about quality, performance, etc. If the file received little or no feedback, it is best not to download it.

Step 5. Download the torrent

To download the torrent, click on the small magnet icon or on the link Download this torrent. Avoid clicking on options Direct download, To download Where Magnet download, otherwise you will see a multitude of unwanted popups appear and be redirected to other pages.

  • While the torrent is downloading, the already downloaded parts of the file will be shared with other peers.
  • Even after downloading the file, uTorrent will continue to share the file with other users on the uTorrent network. File sharing will only end if you delete the file or close uTorrent.

Step 6. Wait for the download to complete

After downloading, uTorrent will automatically open the link or file (or you will be prompted to open it with a program. Choose uTorrent as the default program). uTorrent will also open another window in which you must select the button OK in the lower right corner.

  • The download time depends on the size of the file and the number of seeders (people sharing the file).
  • The higher the number of seeders, the faster the download will be, as parts of the file are shared by other peers.

Step 7. Navigate to the file

Select the tab Completed to access the file after it has been downloaded. Right click on the file then select Show in Finder or select the magnifying glass icon, to open the torrent.

  • If you downloaded a movie, right-click on the file, then select Open with and select the desired media player.

Advice

  • Always try to know the number of seeders and leechers in the torrent. The higher the number of seeders, the faster the download. And the higher the number of leechers, the slower the download.
  • Checked if the torrent was uploaded by someone reliable. Usually, reliable sources have a purple or green skull next to their pseudonyms.
