Are you looking to make new friends online? Are you a student who wants to communicate with young people of their age? Or are you just looking for the thrill of anonymity? Omegle offers a free, anonymous instant messaging service that offers all of these possibilities (and many more!). Omegle is open to everyone without registration, so you can start meeting new people now!
Part 1 of 3: Chat on Omegle
Step 1. Visit the home page
- you must be over 13 years old;
- if you are under 18, you must have the consent of your parents or legal guardians to visit the site;
- you must not distribute obscene content or use Omegle to harass other users;
- you must obey the laws in force in the country where you live.
Step 2. Choose between written chat and video chat
At the bottom right of the home page, there is a button where you can read Start chatting, with two options below: Text and Video. These two possibilities correspond exactly to their titles. The Text option allows you to chat with a stranger in writing, while the Video option allows your stranger to see your face and hear your voice and so will you. Choose at your convenience what you prefer.
Note that to participate in a video chat, you must have a working microphone and webcam. Nowadays, most computers come with a microphone and a camera integrated directly into the screen, but this is not always the case. If your computer does not have these peripherals by default, you will need to purchase them. For more information, do not hesitate to consult the articles on how to configure your webcam and connect a microphone to your computer
Step 3. Start chatting
Once you have selected your conversation settings, you will be immediately connected with a stranger. To talk to him, all you have to do is type a message in the chat window and click on Send (send) or press the key Entrance on your keyboard. If you have chosen video chat, you will be able to hear the caller and see them on the left side of the screen. You will also see a return from your own webcam.
- If you have opted for video chat, a popup window may open asking you for permission to turn on your webcam during the first connection. Click on Yes Where OK to activate it and start the conversation.
Step 4. To exit a conversation, click Stop
If you are tired of chatting with someone, you will find a “Stop” button at the bottom left of your screen. Once you click on it, you will see Really? (really?) appear to ask you to confirm that you want to end the conversation.
- You can double-click this button at any time to end a discussion. This can be very useful if you stumble upon content that you don't want to see.
- Also be aware that it is very common for Omegle users to end conversations very quickly (sometimes even before a single participant has had time to send a message). Don't take it personally, some people just want to be put in touch with a huge number of strangers before choosing one to talk to.
Part 2 of 3: Using optional parameters
Step 1. Indicate what are your areas of interest
This option allows you to meet people who are the same as you. Go back to the home page (which you can reach at any time by clicking on the Omegle logo at the top left) and enter a few keywords corresponding to your tastes and interests in the What do field you wanna talk about? (what do you want to talk about ?). Then click on Text (text) or Video (video) and Omegle will do whatever it takes to connect you with strangers who want to talk about the same things.
If Omegle can't find any other user who wants to talk about the same topics as you, they'll just connect you with a random person, just like they normally do
Step 2. Save your conversation histories
Every once in a while some discussions on Omegle are so funny, so rewarding, or so annoying that you want to keep track of them! Don't bother copying and pasting by hand, Omegle's chat has an export feature. After logging out, you will see an orange button Great chat? (great conversation?) followed by links. Click on Get a link (get link) to have the onscreen discussion open in a new tab, along with an easy-to-use link. You can also use the option Select all (select all) to highlight the entire conversation so you can easily copy it.
You will also see redirect links to Facebook, Twitter and a number of other social networks. Clicking on one of these links will take you to a ready-made post, which you can share right on your wall. Nothing better to spread a hilarious conversation history widely
Step 3. Fill in your university address
Omegle offers a private chat specially reserved for students. To access it, you must go to the home page and click on College student chat (chat for students registered at the university), then enter a valid email address ending in ".edu".
You must then consult your mailbox, on which Omegle will have sent you a verification link. Once the validity of your email address is confirmed, you can go to the part of the chat reserved for students
Step 4. Test spy mode to ask questions
You can also have fun by watching or listening to strangers' conversation about a topic you have chosen! To do this, simply click on the button Spy mode (spy mode) at the bottom right of the home page. You will then be invited to formulate an open-ended question which will be submitted for debate. Ask your question, then click ask strangers (ask strangers) to see what people have to say about it!
- If instead you prefer to be one of those who answer questions, click on the link discussing questions (answer questions) just below. Note, however, that when this mode is selected, if the person you are talking to disconnects, you will also be disconnected. So you have to hurry to type your answer!
Step 5. Try the adult chat without moderator
You must be over 18 years old. No need to hide their face, some users log into Omegle to take part in discussions of a sexual nature. If you are interested, you can click on the links Adult (adults only) or Unmoderated Section (section without moderation) of the home page. The content of this part of the chat will generally be quite self-explanatory!
While this may seem obvious, it's worth mentioning: in the non-moderated part of Omegle's chat that's for adults only, you're bound to come across pornographic content. Access is at your own risk
Part 3 of 3: Respect the rules of good manners on Omegle
Step 1. Don't take things too seriously
Omegle is a space where complete strangers from all over the world come together to share their stories and build fleeting relationships. Sometimes it is for the best, but as it is also very often for the worse, do not attach too much importance to what is happening on the site. Omegle users, protected by their anonymity, tend, as in any online community, not always to behave with great elegance. If you are insulted or threatened, don't answer, don't get bad, just end the conversation!
Step 2. Don't say anything that identifies you
On Omegle, as in all anonymous places of expression on the Internet, it is essential to take some basic precautions to protect your identity. Even with someone you get along with, never share your name, address, or any personal details. You have no way of verifying that the person you're talking to is really who they say they are, so you must remain anonymous yourself. Most Omegle users are perfectly normal and sane people, but it should always be borne in mind that a black sheep with malicious intentions may be hiding among them.
When participating in a video chat, don't leave anything lying around your webcam that could be used against you. All documents on which are written your identity or your address, banking information or elements which would make it possible to locate you must remain out of sight
Step 3. Do not post anything obscene in the part of the chat open to minors
Omegle offers a space where only adults are admitted, where it is allowed to discuss subjects reserved for adults if you wish. Do not write anything that is related to sex and do not broadcast sex on your webcam in the chat that is not intended for this purpose, it would be against the rules of good manners in force. You have to take into consideration that other users don't want to see such things. If so, they wouldn't be there, but in the unmoderated part.
It is also good to remember that apart from the “non-moderated” part, the site has a moderation system. Omegle doesn't say exactly what sort of moderation is at work, but they are arguably human moderators and / or programs that spot pornographic or inappropriate content and prevent it from being shown in mainstream chat
Step 4. Be nice to the new kids
Omegle is open to everyone, including people who are unsure of how to use it. Now that you are an expert on this site, help others better understand how it works. For example, if the person who was linked to you for a video chat is having trouble starting their webcam, don't leave the conversation to find someone more interesting to talk to. Instead, write to tell him to click Yes in the popup window (or send him the link to the article which explains how to configure his webcam).
Be patient. The people in front of you will need a little time to figure out how this works. But by making the effort to help them, you help make Omegle a more welcoming and warm place
Step 5. If you have any doubts, feel free to log out
When something goes wrong, for example if the person you're talking to gets weird and disturbing and asks for personal information, double-click the button immediately. Stop. Omegle has 6.5 million users per month, so there are always thousands of people to talk to. Don't waste your time with someone who disrespects you.
- Use a nickname so you don't get harassed.
- If you meet someone you like, try asking for their email address to stay in touch.
- If you are under 18, you must ask your parents' permission before going to Omegle.
- If the discussion gets too intimate, cut it short.
- Never communicate any personal data on the internet.
- Access to Omegle is prohibited for children under the age of 13.
