It's nice to do yourself good by going to the beautician, but sometimes you don't have time to wait for your next appointment. If you can't make it to your beautician and want to try waxing yourself, this article will give you some tips on how to make and use your own wax.
Ingredients
- 1 cup (250 mL) powdered sugar
- 1 cup (250 mL) honey
- 1/2 cup (125 mL) lemon juice
Steps
Part 1 of 2: making the wax

Step 1. Melt the sugar
In a saucepan with a more or less thick bottom, pour the sugar and heat over medium heat, without stirring, simply shake the saucepan from time to time - until the sugar begins to caramelize. It will give off a delicious smell!

Step 2. Mix the honey and lemon juice with a wooden spoon
Warning: the sugar will generate a lot of foam and will be extremely hot.
Stir until the mixture is completely melted and has taken on the consistency of pancake batter. If the mixture is too thick, moisten by adding a tablespoon of water at a time until you get the right consistency

Step 3. Then let the mixture cool slightly before using it
You can store it in the refrigerator after letting it cool if you want to use it later.
Part 2 of 2: using wax

Step 1. Check the length of the hairs you want to pluck
Ideally, your hairs should be 3-6mm long.
- If they are too short, you will not be able to remove the root with the waxing.
- If they are too long, it may be painful.

Step 2. Now prepare your fabric strips
If you don't have one on hand, cut or tear a cotton or linen t-shirt.
If you find that the edges are too frayed, you can sew your strips with a sewing machine

Step 3. Apply talcum powder to the area to be depilated before applying the wax
The talcum powder or cornmeal will absorb water and fat from the surface of your body, allowing the wax to stick well to the hair (not your skin). This will make hair removal less painful.

Step 4. Apply the wax
Using a wooden tongue depressor or spatula, apply your homemade wax where you want to wax. Apply it in the direction of hair growth.

Step 5. Press the epilation strip against the wax
Take a strip of fabric, place it on the wax, and smooth it in the direction of the hair growth.

Step 6. Wait for the wax to cool completely
Pull lightly on the end of the strip to check that it is firmly stuck.

Step 7. Remove the tape
Tighten your skin tightly by pulling it from a point below where the fabric strip is placed, then pull against the direction of hair growth. Pull sharply. Do not pull the strip at 90 °, but at a lower angle.

Step 8. Store the remaining wax in your refrigerator
It should last a few weeks there, and hold a few months in the freezer.
Advice
- If you are waxing in a visible area, such as your face, you can apply a cooling gel afterwards to minimize redness. If you tend to get redness easily, consider waxing areas of your face on days when you don't intend to go out.
- If the mixture leaves residue on your skin, rinse the area with warm water. If that doesn't work, boil some water on your stove top and add a tablespoon of baking soda to it. Let the water cool before using it to clean the residue from your skin.
- If the mixture hardens before you can apply it, heat it in a double boiler until it is melted again.
- Exfoliate your skin about 2 days before waxing with an exfoliating cleanser or loofah.
Warnings
- Avoid heating wax in the microwave. The microwave does not heat the wax evenly and some parts of the wax may come out extremely hot. To heat your wax, place it in a bowl of hot water instead.
- Test the temperature of your wax well before applying it to your skin.
