By updating your Snapchat app, you can gain access to the latest features, including the all new and already very popular “Lenses”. Once you've updated Snapchat, you'll need to make sure that all of the new features you want to use have been enabled. The Lenses feature is not available for all devices, but you should be able to bypass this restriction. If you fancy using some of the latest Snapchat effects, check out How to Use Effects on Snapchat.
Method 1 of 5: Android
Step 1. In order to get Lenses, update Snapchat to Android 5
The new Lenses feature requires your Android device to be running at least version 5.0 (Lollipop). If you're using a device that's stuck on version 4.4 or earlier, you won't be able to use Lenses, even if Snapchat is up to date. To check the version of your device, you could:
- open the application of Settings
- to push on about the phone Where about the device
- look for the entrance Android version
- some users reported issues with Lenses while their device was running at least Android version 5.0. If your device is normally compatible, but Lenses is not working, you might have to wait for further updates from Snapchat. If your Android is rooted, you could try using a tweak with the Xposed framework. Click here for detailed instructions
Step 2. Open the Google Play Store to update Snapchat
You will find this app in the app launcher or on the home screen.
Step 3. Press the Menu button (☰) and select “My apps”
The list of installed applications should open.
Step 4. Find "Snapchat" in this list
If an update is available for Snapchat, it should appear in the section Updates available and will display Update in the lower right corner of the app box.
You could also search the store on Snapchat to open its associated page
Step 5. Press the “Update” button
If an update is available, you will see this button on the app page in the store. By pressing Update, the download of the update files will start immediately. This one might take a few minutes. The update will automatically install and you will be notified when it is finished.
If there is no update option available, then you are currently using the latest version of Snapchat. If you have the most recent version and some special features like Lenses don't work, your device may not be compatible
Step 6. Activate additional features
New features are not always enabled by default. You can activate them in the menu of Settings from Snapchat.
- Tap the Snapchat icon at the top of the camera screen. Your Snapchat profile will then open.
- Tap the gear icon located in the top right corner of your profile.
- Press on To manage in the section Other services.

Step 7. Use the new Lenses feature
If you're using a compatible device and you've updated Snapchat, you have the option to access Lenses' special effects by long-pressing your face before taking a snap.
Step 8. Consider joining the beta of Snapchat
Snapchat for Android offers a beta program. Joining this program will give you access to new Snapchat features, however the app will be less stable than the regular app. If you don't mind having an app that crashes occasionally, you could join the beta program.
- In the menu Settings, scroll down the page and press Join the beta version of Snapchat.
Press on Count me in!
to confirm. You will be taken to a web page where you can join the Google+ community, which is necessary to gain access to the beta version.
- Fill out the form to join the beta program, then wait about an hour.
- Uninstall and reinstall Snapchat and the option Snapchat Beta will then appear in the menu of Settings. Use this menu to access Beta features.
Method 2 of 5: iPhone and iPad
Step 1. Update Snapchat on your iPhone 5 or newer to get the Lenses feature
This new Snapchat feature is only available on iPhone 5s or newer iPhones. If you have an iPhone 4 or 4s, you won't be able to use it, even if Snapchat is up to date.
- The Lenses feature will not work on 5th generation or older iPods and iPad 2 or older.
- If your old device is jailbroken, you might be able to activate the Lenses feature by installing a little Cydia tweak. Click here for more detailed instructions.
Step 2. Open the App Store to check the availability of Snapchat updates
You will find the App Store button on your home screen.
Step 3. Tap the “Updates” tab
It's at the bottom of the screen.
Step 4. Find "Snapchat" in the list of "Available Updates"
If Snapchat does not appear in this list, then there is no update available and you are using the most recent version.
Step 5. Press the “Update” button
The Snapchat update download will begin immediately. It may take a few minutes to download and install.
Step 6. Launch Snapchat
You can launch Snapchat from the App Store page or by tapping the app icon on the home screen.
Step 7. Activate additional features
When you update Snapchat, the new features might not activate automatically. You can activate them from the menu of Snapchat settings.

- Press the gear button which is in the top right corner.
- Scroll down and press To manage. You will find this option in the section of Other services.

Step 8. Access the new Lenses feature

Step 9. Troubleshoot update issues
Some users reported that Snapchat sometimes struggles to complete the update process. When this happens, the app disappears from the Home screen and the update fails.
- Open the app Settings of your device.
- Press on General, then on Use Where ICloud Usage & Storage.
- Press on Manage storage in the section Storage.
- Tap Snapchat in the Apps screen, and then tap Delete the app.
- Reinstall Snapchat from the App Store.
Method 3 of 5: Use the Lenses feature
Step 1. Make sure Snapchat is updated on a compatible device
In order to use Lenses, you must be using the latest version of the Snapchat app. Follow the instructions above to install the latest updates on your device.
You will also need to use Snapchat on a compatible device. This means you need to be using an iPhone 5 or later or an Android device running version 5.0 or later. The only exception is if you installed a tweak on a jailbroken iPhone or on a rooted Android device
Step 2. Open the Selfie Camera on Snapchat
This is usually the first screen that appears when you launch Snapchat. You will see the lens capture screen which is located on the front of your device.
Step 3. If the rear lens is on, change the lens
The Lenses feature only works when Snapchat is using the front lens. Press the camera button in the top right corner to change lenses. You should see your face when looking at your device screen.
Step 4. Position your lens so that your entire face is displayed in good light
The Lenses feature works best when it can easily distinguish the contours and features of your face. Try using it in a well-lit room that doesn't cast shadows on your face.
Step 5. Squeeze your face for several seconds
After a while, a frame will appear around your face and different options will appear at the bottom of the screen.
If you are unable to launch the feature, make sure the lighting is correct and that your entire face appears on the screen. Also check that you press for several seconds with your finger without moving. And remember that older devices may not be compatible with this feature at all
Step 6. Scroll through the different Lenses options available
When you select an option, you can see it appear on your face.
The effects of Lenses vary regularly, which is why one of the options you particularly liked may not be available right now
Step 7. Use other commands, like “Open your mouth”
You will see these controls appear on some options screen to trigger additional effects.
Step 8. Take a snap with the Lenses option you want to use
Once you've found the effect you want, you can take a snap like you usually do:
- press the circle (which has the Lenses effect logo) to take a Snap photo,
- press and hold the circle to record a video snap with the Lenses effect.
Step 9. Edit and submit your snap as usual
After taking the snap with the option you chose, you have the option to add text, filters, stickers, and designs just like a normal snap. Once you are done, you can send the snap to your friends or add it to your "Story".
Method 4 of 5: Get Lenses on a Rooted Android
Step 1. Use this method in order to recover Lenses on rooted Android device
Lenses normally only works on Android devices version 5.0 or higher. However, this feature may not work on devices using the correct versions. You could try to work around this problem if your device is rooted. It is not easy to gain root access on an Android device and this process differs depending on the model of the Android. You should find a guide for your specific model on wikiHow.
Check out How to Root Android with UnloockRoot Software to get an overview of how to root Android devices
Step 2. Install the Xposed framework on your rooted Android device
This tool will allow you to add modules that affect your system and the behavior of your applications. You will be able to download the Xposed APK file here. Xposed only works on rooted devices.
Step 3. Launch the downloaded APK file on your Android
The Xposed installer file will open.
Step 4. Open the “Framework” menu in Xposed and press “Install / Update”
A superuser request will appear after a few moments.
Step 5. Press “Grant” to give superuser privileges to Xposed
The latter will then have the authorization to make modifications to the system files of your Android.
Step 6. Restart your Android when prompted
This will complete the Xposed installation process.
Step 7. Launch the Xposed installer application
You can now install the add-on that will trick Snapchat into thinking your device is compatible.
Step 8. Select the “Download” option
This will allow you to find and download new modules.
Step 9. Press the "Search" button and enter "SnapchatLensesEnabler"
This should be the only result of the research.
Step 10. Tap “SnapchatLensesEnabler” to open the associated information page
You will see several options, as well as a description of the module.
Step 11. Press “Download” to download the module
It will download to your device, which should only take a few moments.
Step 12. Install the module once its download is complete
It should only take a few moments.
Step 13. Open the “Modules” menu
The list of your available modules will appear.
Step 14. Check the box next to “SnapchatLensesEnabler”
This activates the new module.
Step 15. Restart your device and launch Snapchat
You should now be able to see the Lenses feature with a long press on your face.
Method 5 of 5: Get Lenses on a Jailbroken iPhone
Step 1. Use this method if your iPhone's version is older than version 5 and it is jailbroken
If you're using an iPhone 4 or 4s and it's jailbroken, you might install a Cydia tweak that will make Snapchat think you have a new model of iPhone. Thanks to this tweak, you will be able to use Lenses on non-compatible devices. For this you need your device to be jailbroken and Cydia installed there. Check out how to jailbreak an iPod touch to learn more about jailbreaking iOS devices (the procedure is the same for iPhones and iPads).
Step 2. Update your Snapchat app using the App Store
Follow the iPhone method above to get the most recent version of Snapchat.
Step 3. Open Cydia on your jailbroken iPhone
You will find the Cydia app on your phone's home screen. This is the jailbreak manager with which you will install the tweak for Snapchat.
Step 4. Search for “SCLenses4All”
This tweak is available on the BigBoss repository site and should therefore appear logically with Cydia sources.
Step 5. Open the “SCLenses4All” information page
Make sure you are on the page created by Luca DeCaro.
Step 6. Press “Install”
You will be taken to the installation page.
Step 7. Press "Confirm" to start the installation of the tweak
This file is small and should therefore be downloaded quickly.
Step 8. Launch Snapchat once the tweak is installed
Once the tweak is installed, you can start using Lenses immediately. Be aware, however, that you may encounter technical errors or problems due to the fact that your device is not actually compatible.
