The skin on the neck is particularly thin and will then show signs of aging more quickly than other parts of your body. In addition, these days we spend a lot of time looking at our phones and computers, a position that favors the appearance of wrinkles on the neck. To combat them, you can strengthen the muscles of your neck through various exercises. You will also need to make sure you take good care of your skin and apply sunscreen. To deal with more pronounced wrinkles, you can also resort to laser or botox treatment, from a specialist doctor.

Method 1 of 3: Work the neck muscles

Step 1. Tilt your head back and stretch your bottom lip

To work the front of your neck, start by placing your fingertips on your collarbones. Then tilt your head back so that you are looking at the ceiling. Stretch your lower lip. Hold this position for 30 seconds.

  • While holding this position, breathe deeply through your nose.
  • This exercise stretches and strengthens the platysma muscle, the large muscle at the front of the neck. As it gets stronger, the skin covering it will appear firmer and tighter. Exercise also helps tone the area below the jawline.

Step 2. Press your tongue against your palate

To exercise your chin and neck muscles, start by turning your head to the right, then tilt your face upward, toward the ceiling. You should start to feel the muscles in your neck pulling. Then place the tip of your tongue against your palate, smile and swallow your saliva.

  • Repeat the exercise on the left side, then in the center. Perform this series 2 or 3 times.
  • This exercise, sometimes called the “baby bird”, works the muscles of the neck and chin at the same time.

Step 3. Turn your head to the side and tilt it back

To stretch the sides of your neck, turn your head to the right and tilt it back slightly, to work the muscles on the left side of your neck. You might also feel the exercise in the muscles on the left side of your face. Hold the position as you inhale and exhale deeply.

Then turn your head to the left and repeat the exercise. Repeat the entire series 2 times

Method 2 of 3: Take care of your skin

Step 1. Treat the skin on your neck like the skin on your face

If you already have a favorite facial cleanser, use this one. Wash your face and neck morning and night. Then apply a moisturizer, which may be enough to temporarily camouflage your fine lines by plumping your skin cells.

To gently exfoliate your skin, use a washcloth. This will prevent the skin on your face and neck from becoming dull

Step 2. Apply sunscreen to your neck

Sun products are the best preventive measure against neck wrinkles. Be sure to apply sunscreen to your neck and face every morning, before you leave your house, to avoid UV damage. Apply the product at least 30 minutes before going out in the sun.

  • Use sunscreen containing at least an index 30 filter.
  • Take a dab of sunscreen the size of a large grape. This amount should be enough to cover your face, ears and neck.

Step 3. Use vitamin C serum to promote skin regeneration

Apply the serum to your neck every morning, in addition to your sunscreen. Studies have shown that combining vitamin C with a sunscreen can double the effectiveness of the filter. Antioxidants also promote skin regeneration, so the skin on your neck will stay younger for longer.

You could also try a serum that contains ascorbic acid, a form of vitamin C that the skin easily absorbs

Step 4. Exfoliate your neck once or twice a week

Use a facial brush on your neck, to remove dead skin cells. You could also buy a facial cleanser that contains glycolic acid and use it on your neck. By leaving dead cells on the surface of your neck, your skin will appear dull and old.

  • If you have sensitive skin, exfoliate your neck only once a week.
  • Exfoliation will allow your skin to better absorb the retinol cream that you will apply afterwards.

Step 5. Apply a retinol cream

Choose a cream formulated specifically for the face, neck and décolleté. After you've washed and dried your face and neck, apply a dab of the cream with your fingers. Retinol will promote the production of collagen, which will prevent the formation of wrinkles.

  • The most effective retinol products contain 0.5-1% retinol.
  • Since the skin on the neck is very thin, start with a product with low retinol concentration. You can then progress to more concentrated products. If the skin on your neck cannot stand the daily application of retinol, apply the product only every other evening, until your skin gets used to it.

Method 3 of 3: Go for a cosmetic treatment

Step 1. Stimulate collagen production through laser treatment

The laser is sometimes used to boost the production of collagen, which will plump your skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. The treatment will also strengthen the skin. Different types of lasers can be used on the skin and you will need to see a doctor to determine which one to try.

  • Your doctor will also tell you the number of laser sessions to perform and the spacing between these sessions, so that your skin can heal. To see satisfactory results, it usually takes 2 or 3 sessions, about 1 month apart.
  • You will see the first results right after a laser session, but you will usually have to wait 90 to 180 days after the first session for collagen production to be complete.

Step 2. Temporarily relax your neck muscles with botox

Botox is a temporary solution to neck wrinkles. Injecting the substance into this part of the body will relax the muscles and thus prevent the formation of wrinkles on the skin. However, once the botox subsides, usually after 3 to 5 months, the muscles in the neck will tighten again and wrinkles will reappear.

Botox should only be injected in a professional practice, under the supervision of a doctor

Step 3. Inject fillers into your neck to smooth out wrinkles

A doctor may inject fillers directly into the horizontal wrinkles on your neck to smooth them out. The procedure will take about 10 minutes and may cause swelling and bruising, which will go away quickly. The results will last approximately 1 year.

However, the procedure presents some risks. Since the skin on the neck is very thin and moves a lot, it is possible that the fillers make small balls appear. Before opting for this solution, check properly with a competent doctor

Don't spend too much time looking at your phone or computer every day. This will promote the appearance of deep wrinkles in the neck, called tech neck. If you have to look down, try moving your head, craning your neck, instead of just lowering your chin

  • If you decide to treat the wrinkles on your neck with fillers, take all necessary precautions and seek the advice of your doctor. The skin on the neck is extremely thin and is constantly moving. Balls could appear if the fillers start to move.
  • If you decide to apply retinol creams to your neck to reduce your wrinkles, always start with a low-concentration product. If the product is very strong, it may irritate the skin on your neck.
