You can create a visual theme for your Google Chrome browser on a computer. You will use an online tool called Theme Creator for this. Note that creating a theme is not the same as installing a new theme.

Steps

Part 1 of 4: add a background image

Step 1. Open Google Chrome

This is the red, yellow, green and blue icon in the shape of a sphere. Make sure you open Chrome on a computer, as you can't create and install a theme on a mobile platform like a phone or tablet.

Step 2. Go to the Theme Creator website

Open this page in your browser.

Step 3. Click Import Image

It's the green button at the top left of the page. Click on it to open File Explorer (on Windows) or Finder (on Mac).

Step 4. Select an image

Click on the image you want to use as your theme's background image. This is what will appear on the New Tab page, so make sure this is the photo you like.

Step 5. Choose Open

This button is located at the bottom right of the window. Click on it to import the photo to the Theme Creator page.

Step 6. Reposition your image

In the Background Image section under the preview window, you will find 4 drop-down fields with the words "Center", "Bottom", "No repeat" and "Normal size". If you want, you can adjust these options.

  • Center: click on the drop-down field Center then choose Left Where Law in the menu that appears.
  • Up or down: click on the drop-down field Low then select High in the menu that appears.
  • Repeat: expand the field No repetition then click on repeat XY, repeat X Where repeat Y.
  • Size: click Normal size then choose Fill the screen Where Fit to screen.

Step 7. Review your image

If you are satisfied with the orientation of the image in the preview window, you can proceed to the next step.

Part 2 of 4: add theme images

Step 1. Go to the Images tab

You will find it at the top left of the page. Click on it to display a list of the different parts of the browser window.

Step 2. Add a frame image

Click on Choose an image next to the Frame heading then select an image and click on OK. The selected image will be applied to the frame around the Chrome window.

Step 3. Add a toolbar image

Click on Choose an image next to the Toolbar heading then select an image and click on OK. You will see the image appear in the Toolbar section of the preview window on the right side of the page.

Step 4. Add a tab background image

Click on Choose an image next to the Background tab heading, choose an image and click on OK to apply it as the background image of tabs open in the browser.

For example, if you are on the Theme Creator tab and Facebook is open in another tab, the Facebook tab will show the selected photo as the background image

Step 5. Review your theme

Take a look at the preview window on the right side of the page to make sure your theme meets your expectations. If so, you can move on to the next step of selecting colors for your theme.

Part 3 of 4: select theme colors

Step 1. Go to the Colors tab

This tab is located at the top left of the page, just to the right of the Images tab.

Step 2. Change the color of the status bar

The status bar designates the small white field that appears at the bottom left of the Chrome window when you open a page. Click on the colored field to the right of the Status bar heading then choose a color by clicking on it. Click anywhere on the page to close the field.

If you want to darken or lighten the color, click the slider to the right of the field and drag it up and down

Step 3. Change the color of the tab text

Click on the field next to the Text tab header and select a new color. You can change the available colors by dragging the slider to the right of the pop-up field up.

Step 4. Change the text color of the background tab

This is the color of tabs loaded, but not opened. Click on the field next to the Text header on the Background tab and select a color.

Step 5. Change the color of the bookmark text

Expand the field next to the Bookmark Text header and select a color.

Step 6. Change the color of the button

This will change buttons like the "Back" or "Back" arrows. Click on the field next to the Buttons heading and then select a color from the pop-up field that appears.

Step 7. Review your changes

Take a look at the preview window to see how the colors have been implemented. If you are satisfied with the result, then all you have to do is install your new theme!

Part 4 of 4: install the theme

Step 1. Go to the Package tab

This is one of the tabs at the top left of the page, just to the right of the Colors tab.

Step 2. Click Package and Download Zip File

This option is on the left of the page and allows you to download a copy of your theme to your computer (in the form of a compressed folder).

If you don't want to save your theme, go directly to the next step

Step 3. Choose Package and Install

It's the green button at the top of the page.

  • If prompted, click To continue at the bottom left of the Chrome window.

Step 4. Click Add Theme

You will see your theme appear at the top of the Chrome window. It means it has been installed successfully!

Step 5. Open a new tab

Click the new tab button to the right of the open tab or press Ctrl + T (Command + T on a Mac). This will allow you to see your new theme in all its glory.

Step 6. Review your theme

The New Tab page will allow you to see all aspects of your theme, including the images and colors you have selected.

  • If you don't like your theme, you can restore the default one by clicking on at the top right of Chrome then selecting Settings then Restore Default Settings to the right of the Themes heading (found at the top of the page).
