When Instagram launched, you could only upload 4: 5 aspect ratio photos for portrait images. Today the app supports 1: 1 square images, 4: 5 aspect ratio portraits and 16: 9 landscape photos. Images can range from 320 x 320 pixels up to over 1080 x 1080 pixels. You can also use a third party app to prepare the images for Instagram. Another tip is to use an app to cut photos into square grids. If you upload them to your account in the correct order, they will appear as a single image in a grid on your profile. It is therefore quite possible to upload large photos to Instagram.
