Like most messaging apps and most social media, Instagram offers the ability to block other users and unblock previously blocked users. This is possible either on the mobile application or on the website. If you are being harassed by someone who creates new accounts every time you block them, you can report it and make your account private. You cannot unblock yourself from another user's block list.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Block a user on mobile
Step 1. Open Instagram
Tap the app icon that looks like a multi-colored camera. If you are already logged in to your Instagram account, the app will open on your home page.
If you are not yet signed in to your account, enter your username (or email address / phone number) to sign in
Step 2. Go to a user's page
Scroll down the home page until you find the user you want to block and then tap their profile picture.
- You can also press To research
at the bottom of the screen then type the name or username of the person you want to block to display their profile.
Step 3. Press ⋯
This button is located at the top right of the screen and opens a menu.
- If you are using an Android device, tap ⋮.
Step 4. Select Block
This option can be found in the menu.
Step 5. Tap Block when prompted
The user will be added to your blocked users list and will no longer be able to see your profile or comment on your posts.
- On Android, tap Yes I confirm when prompted.
Method 2 of 3: Unblock a user on mobile
Step 1. Open Instagram
Tap the Instagram app icon that looks like a multi-colored camera. If you are already logged in to your account, you will see your home page.
If you are not logged in to your Instagram, first enter your username (or email address / phone number)
Step 2. Go to your profile tab
This tab is located at the bottom right of the screen and opens your profile page.
If you are logged in to more than one Instagram profile on your device, this tab will look like your profile picture
Step 3. Press ☰
This button is located at the top right of the window. Tap on it to open a pop-up menu.
Step 4. Select Options
This option is at the bottom of the context menu.
Step 5. Scroll down to the Blocked Accounts option
The Blocked Accounts option is in the middle of the page under the heading Privacy and Security.
Step 6. Choose a user
Tap the profile of the person you want to unblock.
Step 7. Tap Unblock
It's the blue button at the top of the screen. Tap it to immediately unblock the user.
- If you are using an Android device, you will need to select Yes I confirm after pressing Unblock to confirm your decision.
Method 3 of 3: Block a user from the website
Step 1. Open Instagram
In your favorite web browser, connect to Instagram. Your home page will appear if you are already signed in to Instagram on your computer.
- If you are not yet logged in, click Log in at the bottom right of the page then enter your username (or your email address / phone number) followed by your password.
Step 2. Choose a user to block
Scroll down the home page to the profile of the person you want to block and click on their name to display their account.
You can also type their username or profile name in the search bar at the top of the Instagram page and then click on their profile in the results that appear
Step 3. Click ⋯
This icon is at the top of the person's profile page, next to their name. Click on it to open a menu.
Step 4. Select Block this user
The Block this user option is at the bottom of the menu.
Step 5. Choose Block
This option adds the account to your blocked users list.
Step 6. Unblock the user
To unblock a user on the Instagram website, go to their profile page, click on Unblock at the top of the page then select Unblock when prompted.
Advice
- It's always best to make your account private so that anyone who wants to see your photos will need to send you a subscription request first.
- Blocking someone in the Instagram app also blocks them on the website. This also applies if you unlock it.
Warnings
- The blocked user will still be able to open another account to view your photos.
- Unblocking someone will not reactivate their account subscription and they will also be able to see that you have removed them from your subscriber list.
