Step 1. Avoid situations where you will be surrounded by a large group of friends

Hiding your depression from others is not always easy, especially from friends who know us well. To make your discomfort less noticeable, avoid situations where you will be surrounded by a lot of people. This way, you won't have to pretend to be happy and enthusiastic around others. Prefer to see your close friends in small groups, so you don't have to constantly hide what you're going through.

Step 2. Go to events with close friends

To silence any suspicion about possible depression, make an effort to make brief appearances at the various events to which you are invited, preferably with a few close friends. This will prove to your friends that you are quite capable of going out and seeing people, even if you do suffer from depression.

During these events, do your best to be positive and appear enthusiastic. However, many times doing this will be exhausting and you will probably be tempted, at one point or another, to tell your close friends that you are going through depression. This could be a very good thing, because it is often much better to share what you are feeling than to try to hide your feelings from those close to you

Step 3. Change the subject

If a friend tells you about their anxiety or suggests they suspect you of being depressed, change the subject. Talk about the shows you're watching or the latest hot movie and ask them how their education or career is going. By changing the subject, you will avoid having to talk about your condition and can keep your depression a secret.

  • However, changing the subject is often seen as a sign that you have something to hide. This will be especially true if your friends suspect that you have depression. Assuring your friends that everything is for the best in the best of all possible worlds can also stoke their doubts, as you will probably have a hard time being convincing in your words.
  • You can also be more direct and tell your friends that you appreciate them worrying about you, but that you can't or don't want to talk about depression or anxiety right now. For example, say, “Sarah, I know you care about me a lot and would like to help me get over my depression, but I don't want to talk about it just yet. When I'm ready to talk about it, I'll let you know and I'll tell you how to help me. "

Step 4. Spend time with people who have overcome their depression

By being alone, you won't have to pretend you're not depressed. However, you will probably feel even more isolated. Then try to meet other people who have also suffered from depression. If someone is talking about their anxiety or depression in the office, it might be difficult for you to hide your own depression during the conversation. So that you don't feel pressured to share your own depression, try changing the subject or apologize and stay out of the discussion.

Understand, however, that by sharing what you feel, you will feel less alone. While avoiding all talk about anxiety and depression helps you hide what you're going through, it certainly won't help you get out of it

Maybe you want to hide your depression because you are ashamed, feel guilty, or can't explain why you feel sad and lonely. And if you could want to change the mood and make those around you believe everything is fine, understand that hiding your depression will not allow you to find the help you need. Share what you are going through with a close friend, family member, or partner. By being honest about how you are feeling, you will probably already feel better. Step 4. Ask your doctor for treatment

The combination of therapy and the right treatment has been shown to be effective against depression. Your doctor may prescribe medication to relieve certain symptoms of depression and refer you to a psychologist who will help you cope with your emotions.
