Program updates allow you to use your computer safely, fix errors, or add new functions. Many applications that you install will be updated regularly to improve their functionality. Apple is releasing updates that keep your Mac secure and stable. When a new version of OS X is released, you can download it for free from the App Store. If you are using an older version of OS X, updates go through the Update utility.
Method 1 of 5: Update the App Store apps and operating system
Step 1. Click on the Apple menu and select App Store
The Apple menu is located at the top left of the screen. You can now use the App Store to check for the availability of the latest versions of applications and to install OS X security and repair updates. These changes have been made in OS X Yosemite, if you have an older version, see the section below for instructions on how to install them.
Step 2. Click the Updates tab
You'll find it at the top of the App Store window. The button should display a number that indicates the number of updates available.
Step 3. Click Update
This button is located next to the application to update. The download should start automatically and the installation will begin when the download is complete.
You will see the application and operating system update in the list of available updates (if there are any)
Step 4. Click Update All
This allows you to download and install available updates. If there are many, click Update all to download and install them at the same time.
Step 5. Check for updates after installation
Some might appear installing an older update. Open the Updates tab after installing them all to see if there are any left.
Method 2 of 5: Turn on automatic updates
Step 1. Open the Apple menu
Select System Preferences. You can turn on automatic updates for apps and system so you don't have to check it yourself. This will help you keep your system up to date and secure.
You will find the Apple menu at the top left of the screen
Step 2. Click on the App Store option
This will allow you to open the settings.
Step 3. Check Automatically check for updates
This enables the automatic updates options.
Step 4. Check the boxes under Automatically check for updates
This allows you to automatically check, as well as download and install system and security updates.
Step 5. Click Check Now
This lets you know if there are any updates available now. If there is, this will start the download and installation immediately.
Method 3 of 5: Update installed apps without the App Store
Step 1. Check for updates in the app
Some of them, which you downloaded from websites or from CDs, have a tool to check for updates. Find one in the menu Aid Where File. Follow the instructions to install any available updates. You may have to uninstall the program to install the new version.
Note that not all programs have this setting
Step 2. Go to the developer's site
Some developers offer updates directly on their website. Go to the home page and check if there is a section New Where Downloads to see if a new version is available.
- You can often find a link to the developer's site in the section In regards to in the menu Aid.
Step 3. Download and install the new version
Some apps that you installed directly from the Internet might not offer updates and you will need to install the new version manually.
- Download the installation wizard for the latest version of the program from the website.
- Drag the installed program from the applications folder to the trash. This will remove the program, but you will usually keep the saved settings.
- Launch the wizard you downloaded and drag the app to the apps folder. This will allow you to install the latest version.
Method 4 of 5: Install a new version of OS X
Step 1. Open the App Store
Updates are free and are generally recommended for access to new features and better security. You can download them to your Mac directly from the App Store.
Step 2. Find the update
The update page in the App Store will usually appear at the top of the window if you haven't installed it already. If you don't see it, you'll find it at the top of the section Quick links on the right side of the page. You can also search for the name of the update.
At the time of writing this article, the last update was called "El Capitan"
Step 3. Click the Download button
The update download will begin. Usually they are quite large and you may have to wait several hours for the download to complete.
If you don't have a high-speed connection or don't want to consume too much data, you can take your computer to any Apple store to have them update you
Step 4. Launch the installer
If it did not start automatically after downloading, you can launch the program which will appear in the applications folder. This will start the update.
Step 5. Follow the instructions that appear
The update will not affect your personal files or your programs
Step 6. Wait for the installation to complete
The update should usually take between 20 and 30 minutes and your Mac will restart when you are done. You should be able to find all files and programs where they were after installing the update.
Method 5 of 5: Install updates to older versions
Step 1. Open the Apple menu
Select System update. This will open a new window for you where you can check for updates.
Step 2. Manage preferences for updates
You can choose a schedule for updates to determine their frequency, or you can choose to check for updates and install them automatically as they become available.
- Select Check for updates, then choose how often to check. This can be done every day, every week or every month.
- Select Automatically download updates if you want your computer to automatically check them and install them as soon as they are available. You may need to restart it after installation.
Step 3. Click the Check Now button
This will verify the availability of updates for your system and for your programs.
Step 4. Select the checkbox of the updates to install
After checking, you will have a list of updates that can be installed. Each should be followed by a checkbox. Check the one that accompanies the program you want to update.
Step 5. Click the Install button
You will be prompted for your administrator password. Once you enter the password, the updates should download and install.
Step 6. Open the App Store to check for updates
The software update window will not check for any that may be in the App Store. You are going to have to do it yourself.
- Open the App Store.
- Click on the tab Updates.
- Click on the button Update next to applications for which an update is available to download them.
