If your home connection seems slow, it could be because your Wi ‑ Fi signal is too weak. Before changing your equipment, try a simple and inexpensive trick! All you need to do is grab a can of beer or soda and equip yourself with an instrument powerful enough to cut it.

Make a Wi Fi Booster Using Only a Can Step 1

Step 1. Study the operation of the assembly

Basically, the router is the device through which the Wi ‑ Fi signal propagates. As this is generally omnidirectional, part of it dissipates or is attenuated by various obstacles. The principle is therefore to amplify the intensity of the signal by concentrating the waves in one direction. For example, if you want to use a console in a different room from where the router is located, the mere presence of a wall decreases the signal strength. By placing aluminum foil so that it is oriented, the signal is stronger, allowing devices that are usually out of range to be connected.

The range of a home Wi ‑ Fi signal depends on several factors such as the presence of partitions or the type of router. If your connection is slow despite your adjustments, try moving your router or closer to it

Step 2. Prepare your materials

To create your Wi-Fi booster, obtain the following:

  • a 50 cl aluminum drink can
  • a cutter
  • a pair of scissors suitable for cutting metal sheets or a hacksaw
  • an adhesive pad of the Patafix type

Step 3. Wash the can

Fill it with hot water and wait a few seconds before pouring it. Repeat this several times to keep your bobbin as clean as possible.

  • Note that it is easier to wash a can that you just finished rather than a container with dried beverage residue. However, if you only have a can that is a few days old, you can clean it with hot water and soap.
  • Place the can on a sheet of paper towels or in the drip tray. To make it easier for the water to drain and dry the bobbin, place it at an angle with the opening facing down.

Step 4. Detach the ring

To do this, simply fold it over the opening and then unfold it several times. Once the weld of the ring weakened, you can easily detach it.

Step 5. Cut off the bottom of the bobbin

Using a hacksaw or a utility knife, cut open the bottom of the bobbin by cutting off its bottom part just above the bend.

Be careful when cutting. Aluminum can be difficult to work with, which can cause sudden and dangerous movements when handling your tool. If you are worried about injuring yourself, do not hesitate to wear gloves

Step 6. Cut out the upper part of the bobbin

In doing so, you create the base of the amplifier. Unlike the previous step, you don't have to completely cut out the bobbin. Place your tool just under the curvature of the container. Cut out to about an inch or two from where you started to create an attachment area.

Step 7. Open the bobbin to its full height

For this you must start from the lower edge of the bobbin and on the point opposite to the attachment area. Cut in a straight line along the entire height of the container.

The attachment area should be located at the bottom and in the center of the aluminum foil once the can is unfolded

Step 8. Train your amplifier

Once the cut is complete, unfold the central aluminum foil. Your can now looks like a radar.

  • Once again, take precautions to avoid injuring yourself. The edges of the sheet may be curled and sharp.
  • If you find that the inside of the bobbin is not completely clean, wash again with warm water and soap and dry the bobbin before proceeding to the next step.

Step 9. Stick an adhesive patch under the base of the amplifier

This will keep it in place on the router. Glue the lozenge on what was the top side of the can.

You can also use double-sided tape

Step 10. Install your amplifier

It should be positioned so as to increase the signal in the direction of your choice. Its installation depends on the type of your router.

  • If your router has an outdoor antenna, position your amplifier so that the latter goes through the opening of the can.
  • If your router has an internal antenna, it is not visible. In this case, place your amplifier behind the router and make sure it is facing the direction you want.

Step 11. Take advantage of your new connection

In principle, your signal being stronger, your connection should be faster and smoother.

  • Because the amplifier focuses the signal in one direction, your connection may be weaker if you use a device that is not in that direction. In this case, you can remove or relocate the amplifier.
  • If your router is large enough, you can install another amplifier to further increase the signal strength.

  • The edges of an open can are particularly sharp. As suggested in the article, do not hesitate to wear protective gloves to avoid any risk of injury.
  • Use only aluminum cans, as the waves bounce off this material. Anything made of plastic, glass or wood will be completely ineffective.
