If you are a photographer, editor, designer or graphic designer, the time will come when you should flip an image, depending on your needs. Photoshop makes it super easy for you, whether you want to flip the whole image or just a portion of it.
Method 1 of 2: Flip the entire work area
Step 1. Open the image you want to flip
This procedure will flip the entire image. All you'll see in the dark gray border that surrounds the image in Photoshop is nothing other than your canvas.
Step 2. Flip an image horizontally
You can do this from the menu Picture. This action rotates the image over an imaginary line that runs from the top of the canvas to the bottom. Click on Image → Image rotation → Horizontal symmetry of the work area.
Step 3. Flip an image vertically
You can do this from the menu Picture. This action rotates the image over an imaginary line that runs from the left of the canvas to the right. Click on Image → Image rotation → Vertical symmetry of the work area.
Step 4. Pay attention to the wording
Be aware that the naming of this feature may be a little different on various versions of Photoshop. On older versions you will see Rotation and no Image rotation. However, the words are almost similar so they won't be confusing.
- If you still have trouble finding your way, click on the menu Aid at the top of the window and type Rotate. This action should redirect you to the option you are looking for.
Method 2 of 2: Return specific items
Step 1. Select the layer to flip
You have the option of flipping an entire work area or individual layers. To do this, you need to isolate any element you want to flip on its own layer. If you have already done so, you will just have to select the layer in the section Layers to the right of the Photoshop window.
Step 2. Select Manual Transform
This will allow you to manipulate the image. This option makes a field appear around the element and allows you to distort, tilt, twist and rotate the image. To access the manual transformation option, you can follow the following procedure.
- Click on Editing in the menu bar and select Manual transformation.
- When you select the correct layer, press Ctrl + T (on Windows) or ⌘ Cmd + T (on Mac).
Step 3. Open the rotation options
To do this, right click on the image that is selected with the manual transform command. At the bottom in the context menu you will see the options Vertical axis symmetry Where Horizontal axis symmetry. Select the axis on which you want to flip the image.
- Horizontal rotation swaps the left and right sides of the image.
- Vertical rotation swaps the top and bottom of the image.
Step 4. Press Enter to validate the transformation
When you are satisfied with the transformation, you can now press Entrance to apply the changes made to the image. You also have the option of double-clicking in the transformation frame to commit the changes.
