By following the correct method, it is easy to find the IP address of a website. You can do this by using the traceroute feature on your computer or by downloading a free app to your iPhone or Android device.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Find the IP address on Windows
Step 1. Open the Start menu
Click on the Windows logo at the bottom left of the screen.
Step 2. Type command prompt in the Start menu
This will open the command prompt on your computer.
Step 3. Click on the command prompt
It should be at the top of the results window. The command prompt window will open.
Step 4. Type the traceroute command
Type tracert, enter a space, then type the website address (without the "www").
- For example, to find Google's IP address, you can type tracert google.com in the command prompt.
- Make sure you have the correct domain extension for the site (for example ".com" or ".net").
- You must leave a space between tracert and the name of the site.
Step 5. Press Enter
This will launch the command.
Step 6. Write down the site address
Next to the Tracing route to [website] text line that appears, you will see an address in square brackets, this is the site's IP address.
For example, if you followed Google's lead, you should see Tracing route to google.com [216.58.193.78
Method 2 of 4: Find the IP address on Mac
Step 1. Open Spotlight
Click on the magnifying glass icon at the top right of your screen.
Step 2. Open the network utility
Double click on Network utility to the top of the search results. This should open the network utility window.
Step 3. Click Traceroute
It's a tab at the top of the Network Utility window.
Step 4. Enter the website address
In the text field near the top of the window, type the address of the site for which you want to know the IP address.
- For example, to find Google's IP address, you can type google.com.
- It is not necessary to enter "https://" or "www" at the beginning of the site address.
Step 5. Click Identify
It's a blue button on the right side of the page.
Step 6. Write down the site's IP address
Next to the traceroute to [website] text line, you will see an address in parentheses, this is the site's IP address.
For example, if you followed the example with the Google site, you should see traceroute to google.com (216.58.193.78)
Method 3 of 4: Find IP address on iPhone
Step 1. Download iNetTools from the App Store
Here is how to do it.
- Open the App Store
on your phone.
- Tap on To look for.
- Select the search bar.
- Type inettools.
- Click on To look for.
- Press on GET right next to the application header.
- Enter your password or use Touch ID if necessary.
Step 2. Open iNetTools
Tap on TO OPEN when the button appears in the App Store or tap the iNetTools icon.
Step 3. Press Trace Route
You will find this option in the middle of the screen.
Step 4. Select the address bar
It is located below the Server heading towards the top of the screen.
Step 5. Enter the address
Enter the address of the site for which you want to know the IP address (for example google.com for the Google site).
You should not include the www in the address
Step 6. Press Start
You will find it at the top right of the screen.
Step 7. Write down the IP address
Next to traceroute to [website] under the heading where it is marked Results, you will see the IP address in parentheses, this is the site you searched for.
For example, if you've tried to find Google's IP address, you should see traceroute to google.com (216.58.193.78)
Method 4 of 4: Find the IP address on Android
Step 1. Download PingTools Network Utility
Here is how to do it.
- Open the Play Store
from Android.
- Select the search bar.
- Write pingtools.
- Tap on PingTools Network Utility.
- Select TO INSTALL.
- Tap on I ACCEPT.
Step 2. Open PingTools Network Utility
Press on TO OPEN in the Play Store or tap the app icon.
Step 3. Press ☰
You'll find it at the top left of the screen. A popup window will appear.
Step 4. Select Traceroute
This option is located towards the middle of the menu in the popup window.
Step 5. Enter the address
Select the address bar at the top of the screen, then write the address of the site you want to check (eg google.com for the Google site).
Do not put the www. at the beginning of the address
Step 6. Tap TRACE
You will find it at the top right of the screen.
Step 7. Write down the IP address
Under the traceroute to [website] heading, you should see the IP address of the site you have chosen.
In the case of Google, you should see the following sentence displayed: Traceroute to google.com with the address 216.58.193.78
Advice
- You can enter the IP address in the address bar of your browser to go directly to the site. Sometimes this technique can bypass firewalls or parental controls.
- Although not all sites allow you to see their IP address, using the traceroute command instead of the ping command prevents many sites from returning the wrong address.
