- 120 g softened unsalted butter
- 5 cl of milk
- 1 to 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt (optional)
- Food coloring (optional)
Make chocolate frosting

- 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder
- 5 cl of whole milk
- 200 g caster sugar
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Make a simple icing
- 100 g caster sugar
- 2 to 6 tablespoons of water or milk
- ½ teaspoon of almond or vanilla extract (optional)
- Food coloring (optional)
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Make buttercream frosting

Step 1. Take a medium sized bowl and beat butter in it until silky and smooth
You can use a food processor or an electric mixer.

Step 2. Add the sugar in small quantities, little by little
Your preparation will seem crumbly and dry at first, but it will eventually become softer.

Step 3. Gradually add your milk until you get the consistency you want
If your icing is too runny, you can add powdered sugar to it. If it is too hard, add milk.

Step 4. Add a pinch of salt and vanilla extract before mixing well
Salt is not essential, but it will be useful to counterbalance the sugar in your icing.

Step 5. Consider adding a few drops of food coloring
Sprinkle a few drops of food coloring on your icing, then mix well with an electric mixer. Add a few more drops if the color seems too light, then mix again.
Method 2 of 3: Make chocolate frosting

Step 1. Put your butter in a microwave-safe bowl and melt it
It will harden eventually, but it needs to be liquid so that the cocoa powder will dissolve well in it.

Step 2. Add the cocoa powder and mix well
Use an electric mixer or a whisk. Whisk until the powder is perfectly mixed and your color is even.

Step 3. Add the vanilla extract and the milk
Mix until your preparation is frothy.

Step 4. Mix while adding the powdered sugar little by little
You will see your icing gradually solidify. It will also taste more like butter.
- If it is too hard, add several tablespoons of milk, one after the other, until it is soft enough for you.
- If it's too runny, add more powdered sugar.
Method 3 of 3: Make a simple frosting

Step 1. Pour the powdered sugar into a bowl
Instead, use a sieve to break up the sugar packets. Doing this will make it easier to continue with your recipe.

Step 2. Add two tablespoons of water or milk
It is possible to choose another liquid such as orange or lemon juice: you will have a frosting that explodes in your mouth. If you choose this option, skip the food coloring and extracts.

Step 3. Add food coloring or some extracts
The taste of your icing will be enhanced by the almond or vanilla extract and your icing will have a little color if you add a little food coloring. If you used fruit juice in the previous step, don't use coloring or extracts - they won't blend well with the natural color and taste of the juice.

Step 4. Mix your frosting with a fork
It should have a consistency similar to that of a thick paste.

Step 5. Choose a liquid and add a maximum of four tablespoons
You can use your icing as is, but you can also add more water, milk or any liquid you choose. The thinner your frosting, the easier it will be to pour it over cupcakes or cookies.
Advice
- Do not add a pinch of salt if you have used salted butter: it will be enough to balance the sweet taste of your icing.
- It is possible to make creamy frosting by hand, but it will take more time.
- Don't use melted butter: it will only make your icing runny.
Warnings
- Be careful when using a blender.
- There is no point in using too much sugar: it would not be good for your health and some people could even get sick.
