Learn how to create a journal using the functions built into Microsoft Word. Once you get an idea of what you're looking for, you'll be able to create a journal in Word on Windows and on Mac.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Design a journal

Step 1. Look at different newspapers
To learn how the elements of a journal interact with each other, see how they are organized from one publication to another.
- The articles. This is the heart of the journal, where much of the text is.
- Images. Photos and graphics are an essential part of writing a newspaper. They fit between the text blocks and illustrate the articles.
- The titles. The headline is the first thing the reader sees and what lets them know if the article is worth reading.

Step 2. Consider the size of the printer
Unless you have access to an industrial-size printer, your document should be no larger than 8.5 x 27.9 cm, which is the paper size used in most printers.
This is the default Word page size on most computers

Step 3. Prepare your layout before you begin
It can be helpful to have an idea of what your journal will look like before opening Word and organizing its contents. Take some scrap papers to draw some sketches.
- Draw different pages. The front page does not look like any internal page and the different sections have slightly different styles.
- Draw columns to see how they affect the organization of your journal. Too many columns will make your text too dense and few columns will make articles too wide.
- Place blocks of text in different places in your draft. Put text around images or place a photo directly over or under the item it illustrates.
- Experiment with different locations for the title. Headlines should grab the reader's attention, but not be too broad to distract them.
