Learn how to change the vertical or horizontal orientation of a video. You can rotate video by downloading and using Movie Maker on Windows computer, QuickTime on Mac, or free apps on iPhone and Android smartphones.
Method 1 of 4: Rotate video in Windows
Step 1. Download and install Windows Movie Maker
Windows Movie Maker was discontinued in 2012, but you can still download and install it on Windows 10 by visiting a third-party site and downloading it from there.
Although it is possible to use VLC Media Player to rotate a video, it will remove audio from the final result
Step 2. Open Windows Movie Maker
The application icon looks like a strip of film. Click on it to open the Movie Maker projects section.
Step 3. Click Add Videos and Photos
This option is located at the top left of the window in the section Add. A new window will open.
Step 4. Select your video
Go to the location of the video you want to rotate and click on it.
Step 5. Click Open
This button is located at the bottom right of the window. Your video will open in Movie Maker.
Step 6. Rotate the video
Click either on Rotate to the left be sure Rotate to the right in the section Editing from the toolbar. Your video should rotate accordingly.
- You may need to do this step more than once to get the correct orientation.
- In some cases, Rotate to the left will rotate the video to the right once it is recorded (and vice versa for Rotate to the right).
Step 7. Click File
This option is in the upper left corner of the window. A menu will appear.
Step 8. Select Save Movie
This option is in the middle of the menu and opens a pop-up window.
Step 9. Click Recommended for this project
This option is at the top of the pop-up window.
Step 10. Enter a title
Type in the title you want to give your movie.
Step 11. Click Save
This button is located at the bottom right of the window. Your video will be saved under the name you specified. When you read it in any media player, it will be oriented the way you want it to be.
Method 2 of 4: Rotate video on Mac
Step 1. Open Spotlight
Click the magnifying glass icon in the upper right corner of your Mac screen. A search bar will appear.
Step 2. Type quicktime
Spotlight will search for the QuickTime application on your machine.
Step 3. Double-click on QuickTime
QuickTime should be at the top of the Spotlight search results. Double click on it to open the video player.
Step 4. Click File
You'll find this option at the top left of your Mac screen. A drop-down menu will appear.
Step 5. Select Open File…
This option is at the top of the drop-down menu.
Step 6. Open your video
Click on the video you want to rotate.
You may need to open the folder that contains the video first by clicking on the appropriate folder on the left side of the window
Step 7. Click Open
This button is located at the bottom right of the window. It opens the video in QuickTime player.
Step 8. Select Edit
This item is at the top of the screen. A drop-down menu will open.
Step 9. Click on the Rotate option
You will find several options of Rotation from the drop-down menu. Click on the one you want to apply to your video.
Step 10. Record your video
- Click again on File.
- Select Export.
- Choose a quality (for example 1080p).
- Add a name and select a backup folder.
- Click on Save.
Method 3 of 4: Rotate Video on iPhone
Step 1. Download the Rotate & Flip Video app
- Open theApp Store
- Press on To research.
- Tap the search bar.
- Type rotate & flip video
- Press on To research.
- Select GET to the right of the "Rotate & Flip Video" heading.
- Use Touch ID or enter the email address associated with your Apple ID and press To install.
Step 2. Open Rotate & Flip Video
Press on TO OPEN in the App Store or tap the Rotate & Flip Video app icon.
Step 3. Tap the camera icon
It sits in the middle of the screen and opens a context menu at the bottom of the screen.
Step 4. Select Video
You will find this option in the context menu.
Step 5. Press OK when prompted
This allows Rotate & Flip Video to access videos from your iPhone.
Step 6. Select a video album
Tap the album the video is in.
- If you don't know what to select, press Film.
Step 7. Choose a video
Tap the video you want to edit.
Step 8. Press Select
This option is located at the bottom right of the screen. Tap on it to open your video in the main window.
Step 9. Rotate your video
Tap the option 90 until your video has the orientation you prefer.
Step 10. Press Save
This option is at the bottom of the screen and allows you to save the rotated video to your iPhone's Camera Roll.
When you see an advertisement window appear, you can exit the Rotate & Flip Video application
Method 4 of 4: Rotate video on Android
Step 1. Download the Rotate Video FX application
- Open the Google play store
- Tap the search bar.
- Type rotate video fx
- Select Rotate Video FX in search results.
- Press on TO INSTALL.
- Choose ACCEPT.
Step 2. Open Rotate Video FX
Press on TO OPEN in the Google Play Store or tap the Rotate Video FX app icon.
Step 3. Press START ROTATE
This option is on the right of the screen.
Step 4. Select Choose movie when prompted
Your Android photo album will open.
Step 5. Choose a video
Tap the video you want to rotate.
Step 6. Close the ad if necessary
After selecting a video, you may need to tap X Or on TO CLOSE on an advertisement before continuing.
Step 7. Rotate the video
Press any of the arrows at the bottom left or bottom right of the screen to rotate your video 90 degrees left or right.
If you want to rotate your video 180 degrees, just tap the arrow twice
Step 8. Press START
This button is located at the bottom of the screen.
Step 9. Select a conversion speed
Press on Quick method to quickly rotate the video or on Normal method to be sure the video will remain rotated in all supported media players.
Step 10. Wait for the conversion to complete
When you see the video playing, it will mean it has been rotated and saved to your Android's photo album.
