If you have two PDF documents that complement each other, you can perfectly merge them into one. This operation, very easy really, can be done online on a site like PDF Joiner, with an application like PDF Merger & Splitter on Windows or the Preview utility on macOS. With Adobe Acrobat DC, this is possible on both platforms.

Steps

Method 1 of 4: Online

Step 1. On your browser, go to the home page of PDF Joiner

PDF Joiner is a free tool that allows you to get a single PDF by merging two or more of them.

Step 2. Click SELECT

It's the green button in the center of the page. A File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (macOS) window appears. Navigate left in the tree structure of your hard drive to find the folder that contains the PDF files.

Step 3. Find your files

Still on the left, click on the folder that contains the PDF files, which will appear on the right.

Step 4. Select your PDF files

To select multiple files at once, hold down Ctrl (Windows) or ⌘ Cmd (macOS), then click each of the files affected by the merge.

With PDF Joiner, you can merge a maximum of 20 PDF files

Step 5. Click Open Where To choose.

This button is at the bottom right of the selection window. The files selected by you are then uploaded to the PDF Joiner servers. You see as many small square thumbnails as there are files.

If you forgot a file, don't panic! Click on SELECT again and make your choice

Step 6. Wait for all files to download

This time varies depending on the size and number of files, but it does not exceed one or two minutes.

Step 7. Organize your files

Now that they are in the PDF Joiner window, you need to put them in the merge order, which is from left to right. The download order may not be the same as the merge order. To tidy up, it's simple: grab the file with the mouse and drag and drop in the place where the file should be.

Step 8. Click on MERGE

Once the files have been downloaded, the bottom gray button (MERGE) becomes active. By clicking on it, you will obtain a single PDF file which will be composed of PDFs taken from left to right.

  • By default, the merge file is then available in the folder Downloads from your browser.

Method 2 of 4: In Windows

Step 1. Download PDF Merger & Splitter

It is a free application which therefore allows you to merge PDF files or extract pages from these same PDF files. It is downloadable from Microsoft Store. To download it, proceed as follows:

  • click on the menu To start up;
  • click on the Microsoft Store icon, a blue shopping bag with the Windows logo on it;
  • click on To research in the upper right corner;
  • type PDF Merger & Splitter in the search bar;
  • click on PDF Merger & Splitter;
  • click on GET.

Step 2. Run PDF Merger & Splitter

Its icon is a page with an arrow made of dots. For its execution, you can do it from the Start menu, or directly from Microsoft Store, with the button Execute.

Step 3. Click Merge PDF

That purple button right in the middle of the page.

Step 4. Click Add PDFs

This is the first option in the upper left corner. File Explorer will launch, so you can select your files to merge.

Step 5. Find the folder where the files to merge are located

To do this, use File Explorer and find this folder in the tree structure of your hard drive. To open the folder, you must double-click on it.

Step 6. Select the PDF files, then click Open

To select multiple files at once, hold down the Ctrl key, then click each of the files you want to merge. Finally, click on To open in the lower right corner.

  • Click again on Add PDFs (Add PDFs) to download other PDF files.
  • To change the order of the PDF files, click on the relevant PDF file then on Move up (Rise) Where Move down (Go down) at the top of the window.
  • To delete an unwanted PDF file, click the file in question, then click Remove (To delete) at the top of the window.

Step 7. Click Merge PDF

The button is in the lower right corner. A recording alert asks you to confirm the merge, then you are taken to a recording window.

Step 8. Enter a name for the new file

Type it in the field to the right of the mention File name.

In this same window, you will be able to optionally modify the destination folder of the future PDF file

Step 9. Click Save

This saves a single PDF file, the result of merging all the PDF files you have selected.

Method 3 of 4: In macOS

Step 1. Run Finder (

In the Dock, its icon is square with two complementary smiley faces, one blue, the other white. With Finder, you have access to all the folders and files on your hard drive.

Navigate left in the tree structure of your hard drive to find the folder that contains the PDF files.

Step 3. In Preview, run the first PDF file

Unlike a Windows PC, with a Mac you have at your disposal an application (Preview) to cut, merge… PDF files. To run a PDF file in Preview, proceed as follows:

  • right click on the PDF file (tap with two fingers on the touchpad or Magic Mouse);
  • move the cursor to Open with;
  • click on Overview.

Step 4. Click Presentation

This is the fourth menu in the general menu bar at the top of the screen. A drop-down menu will then appear.

Step 5. Click Thumbnails

This is the second option on the menu. A frame of thumbnails appears on the left of the file in which you will see the pages composing the PDF files.

Step 6. Optionally add another PDF file

To do this, now that Preview is open, all you have to do is take the new PDF file with the mouse and drag and drop on this thumbnail frame: the file appears as a thumbnail.

  • To select multiple files at the same time, hold down ⌘ Cmd, then click on each of the files affected by the merge. Once done, take these files and simply drop them with the mouse on the thumbnail frame.
  • To change the order of the pages, take with the mouse the page to be moved in the frame of the thumbnails and place it where you want it, lower as well as higher.

Step 7. Click File

This is the second menu in the general Preview menu bar, at the top left of the screen.

Step 8. Click Export as PDF

This option is in the second half of the menu File.

Step 9. Enter a name for the merged document

Type it in the field to the right of Save as.

This button is in the lower right corner of the window. Before that, optionally choose a destination folder with the drop-down list Site. Here is ! You now have a single PDF file which is the result of merging all the pages that were in the thumbnail frame.

Method 4 of 4: Using Adobe Acrobat DC

Step 1. Run Adobe Acrobat DC

Step 2. Click Tools

The button is in the lower right corner. The files appear in Adobe Acrobat DC in as many small thumbnails.

  • To display other PDF files, click at the top of the screen on Add files.
  • To change the order of the files, click on the thumbnail to move and drop it in the right place, between two thumbnails.
  • To delete a PDF, click once on the thumbnail of the file in question, then on To delete at the top of the page.

Step 8. Click Combine Files

It's a blue button at the top of the page. All PDF files displayed as thumbnails are then merged into a single file, also in PDF format.

This menu is in the general menu bar at the top of the screen.

This option is available in the drop-down menu File from Adobe Acrobat DC.

Step 11. Choose a destination folder

In the right frame, choose one of the recently used folders, otherwise, for a backup in another folder, click on the blue button Choose another folder.

Step 12. Enter a name for the new PDF file

Type it in the field to the right of the mention File name.

The button in question is in the lower right corner of the window. This will save your merged PDF file under the given name.
