For your business needs or personal use, you can use Google Backup & Sync to sync folders in your Google Drive to a Windows computer or Mac. You can also use it to sync your computer's folders to your Google Drive for access from any internet-connected device.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Sync Google Drive to Windows

Step 1. Go to this page

Open the Backup & Sync download page in your web browser to download Backup & Sync.

This option is located under the Personal heading and opens a window with the terms of use for Google Drive.

Step 3. Select Accept and Download

A file called installbackupandsync.exe will be downloaded to your computer.

  • You may need to select a folder and click Save Where To download to download the file.

Step 4. Launch the installation file

Double click on installbackupandsync.exe in the file Downloads on your computer to install Backup and Sync.

  • If you are asked to allow the program to make changes on your computer, click Yes.

Step 5. Click Close

After installing Backup & Sync, you will see a cloud icon appear in your computer's taskbar (the part where the watch, battery level indicator, and volume are located).

Step 6. Open Backup and Sync

Click the cloud icon in the taskbar. If you don't see it, click the arrow to the left of the icons to display additional icons and then select the cloud icon.

Step 7. Select START on the Welcome screen

Step 8. Log into your Google account

Follow the onscreen instructions to sign in with your Google / Gmail username and password.

Step 9. Click on I UNDERSTOOD

You will see a list of folders appear on the screen.

Step 10. Choose the folders to sync to Google Drive

The folders listed at the top of the window are those configured to be backed up by default. The subfolders they contain will also be synchronized.

  • Uncheck the folders you don't want to sync to your Drive.
  • To add a folder, click SELECT A FOLDER under the list of folders, select a folder then click on Select a folder.

Step 11. Select Edit

To choose the files to back up, click To modify which is at the bottom right of the folder list. In the window that appears, follow the steps below.

  • If you want to sync all types of files in all the folders you want to back up, keep the option checked Synchronize all of My Drive.
  • If you only want to sync photos and videos, select Back up photos and videos. You also have the option of saving or not saving screenshots and RAW files.
  • If you don't want to save files with certain extensions (for example files that end in.exe), click advanced settings, type the file extension then click ADD.
  • Click on OK when you are done.

Step 12. Choose your photo sync settings

If you plan to save your photos, choose a file size under the option Import size of photos and videos.

  • Choose High quality to enjoy unlimited storage not counted against your Google Drive quota. The synchronized files will be saved in a slightly lower quality than the original, which will be fine for most people.
  • Choose Original quality to synchronize photos and videos in very high resolution without loss of quality (ideal for videographers or photographers). Just be aware that you will probably need to purchase additional storage space.
  • If you want your photos to appear in your Google Photos account, check the box next to Import photos and videos to Google Photos.

    This option is located at the bottom right of the window.

    Now that you have selected the folders to sync on your Google Drive, all you have to do is choose the folders from your Google Drive to sync to your computer.

    Step 15. Synchronize the folders from your Drive to your computer

    If you want to be able to access files stored on Google Drive when you are working on Windows, check the box next to Synchronize My Drive on this computer at the top of the window.

    • If you sync files from Google Drive, a new folder called "Google Drive" will be added to your primary user folder. You can access this folder from File Explorer by clicking on Google Drive under Quick access.

    Step 16. Choose the folders to synchronize on your computer

    By default, all folders on your Google Drive will be selected. To choose specific folders, check the box Synchronize only these folders and select the folders in question.

    Now the selected files and folders will be synced between your Google Drive and your computer. The cloud-shaped icon in the taskbar will display 2 arrows to indicate that a synchronization is in progress.

    • The sync will happen automatically without you having to click anything to sync your files again.
    • To know the progress of a synchronization, click on the cloud icon in the taskbar.
    • To pause a synchronization in progress, click on the cloud icon and select Pause. Select To resume in the same menu to resume synchronization.

    Step 18. View the synced files on your computer

    • On the taskbar, click Backup and synchronization.
    • Open Google Drive in File Explorer by clicking on the small folder icon with a tiny Google Drive logo inside.

    Step 19. View the synced folders on Google Drive

    • Click on the icon Backup and synchronization.
    • Select the triangular Google Drive icon.
    • Choose Computers in the left side panel.
    • Click on your computer (for example My PC) in the main window to view your files.

    Step 20. Manage your synchronization settings

    If you ever want to change the files and folders to sync, click the Backup and sync icon, select at the top right then choose Preferences.

    • You can add or remove files or folders as often as needed.
    • Go to the tab Settings on the left side of the window to display additional options. It is in this tab that you can configure Backup and Synchronization to start automatically when your computer starts up. You can also adjust the download and import speeds by clicking on Network settings.

    Method 2 of 2: Sync Google Drive to macOS

    This is the InstallBackupAndSync.dmg file that you will usually find at the bottom left of your web browser. You can also double click on it in the folder Downloads. The Install Google Backup & Sync window will open.

    Step 5. Install Backup and Sync

    Drag the Backup & Sync icon to the Applications folder. The Backup & Sync application will be installed in the Applications folder.

    This is the blue and white cloud icon in the folder Applications. You will be asked to confirm opening the application.

    The welcome screen will appear and you will see that a cloud icon has been added to the menu bar at the top right of the screen.

    On the welcome screen, click TO START.

    When you are logged in, click UNDERSTOOD to display a list of folders.

    • If you don't want a folder to sync to your Drive, just uncheck it. For example, if you back up your photos with another app (such as iCloud), you probably won't need to sync them to Google Drive anymore.
    • If you want to add a folder, click SELECT A FOLDER, select a folder then click To open.

    Step 12. Select Edit

    To choose the files to back up, click To modify at the bottom right of the folder list. In the window that appears, follow the steps below.

    • To sync all types of files in all the folders you choose to back up, leave the option Synchronize all of My Drive checked.
    • If you only want to back up your photos and videos, select Back up photos and videos. You can also choose to save screenshots, RAW files, or Apple Photo Library metadata.
    • If you do not want to save files with certain extensions (for example files that end in.dmg), click on advanced settings, type the file extension then click ADD.
    • Click on OK when you are done.

    Step 13. Select your photo sync settings

    If you decide to back up your photos, choose a file size option under Import size of photos and videos.

    • If you choose High quality, you will benefit from unlimited storage space that will not be counted towards your quota to save your photos and videos. Synchronized files will be saved in a slightly lower quality than the original. Most people will be happy with this option.
    • For other users who need to sync super high resolution photos and videos without losing quality (e.g. videographers and photographers), choose Original quality, but just be aware that you will likely need to purchase additional storage space.
    • If you want your photos to appear in your Google Photos account, check the box next to Import photos and videos to Google Photos.

      This option is located at the bottom right of the window.

      Once you have selected the folders to sync to Google Drive, all you have to do is choose the folders from your Drive to sync to your computer.

      Step 16. Sync folders from Drive to your Mac

      If you want the files in your Google Drive to be accessible in Finder, check the box next to Synchronize My Drive on this computer at the top of the window.

      If you sync files from Google Drive, a new folder called Google Drive will be created on your Mac. There you will find the files and folders that you have chosen to sync

      Step 17. Choose the folders to synchronize on your computer

      All folders on your Google Drive are selected by default. If you want to select specific folders, check the option Synchronize only these folders before selecting the folders in question.

      The files as well as the selected folders will be synchronized between your Google Drive and your Mac. The cloud icon in the menu bar will now display 2 arrows to indicate that a synchronization is in progress.

      • The synchronization will be done automatically without having to click anything to synchronize your files again.
      • To know the progress of a synchronization, click on the cloud icon in the menu bar.
      • To pause a synchronization in progress, click on the Cloud-shaped backup and synchronization icon and then select Pause. To resume synchronization, click To resume in the same menu.

      Step 19. View the synced files on Google Drive

      • In the menu bar, click on the icon Backup and synchronization.
      • Click on the triangular Google Drive icon.
      • In the left side panel, select Computers.
      • To view your files, choose your computer (for example My Macbook Air) in the main panel.

      Step 20. View the synced files on your Mac

      • Click on the Finder icon

      Step 21. Manage your synchronization settings

      If you ever want to change the files and folders to sync, click the icon Backup and synchronization (the cloud in the menu bar), select at the top right then click on Preferences.
